Angling is an incredibly fun way to catch fish, but it does require a few changes from your normal fishing habits. Whether you are brand new to angling, or if you are finding that your luck is not as good as it could be, these angling tips will help you get off on the right foot and improve your chances of catching fish. No matter what you’re aiming for, having the right angling tips at your disposal will make a difference.
1. Know the water.
Angling in clear water is much different from angling in a murky lake. When the water is not clear, you have a lot more room for error. However, if you are trying to angle on a clear lake, you will need to be aware of a few things. First, chances are you can see the fish if the water is very clear. This also means that they can see you. Fish are not stupid and will tend to avoid the big scary person with the pole that they see looming over them.
Look for places where there are shadows around the lake, or pick an overcast day. This will provide you with a little more cover and make it more difficult for the fish to spot you. If all else fails, stand in some vegetation to help provide you with a little cover. This will make a big difference in your angling success.
2. Use the right type of test line.
This is actually quite important for angling and something that many people don’t understand. When you think about the size of the fish you will be bringing in, it’s easy to want to go with the heavier test line. However, this is pretty much shooting yourself in the foot. Heavier lines are much more noticeable to fish and you are reducing your chances of actually catching one.
Go for a lighter test line and don’t forget that fish do have a sense of smell. When you are angling, this is very important. Wear gloves when you handle your lines and lures. This will help prevent “human scent” from warning fish away from your bait. In some cases, you may even need to go as far as wearing scent blocker clothes, but simply keeping the line light and test free can make a big difference.
3. Pick the right time of day.
In many cases, the time of day that you angle will have a bigger impact that any other variable. To figure out which time of the day is best for your area and the bodies of water near you, you may need to keep a log book. Go and observe, making note of the weather conditions, the temperature and the season. Start tracking when the fish are most active and compare notes. If you do this a few times, you should be able to get a better idea what time will work for you.
Angling doesn’t have to be a mystery and anyone can do it if they have the right equipment, bait and patience.
