Bay Water Trail Boosted by New Shoreline Camp

baywatertrailcalA two-hour long kayak paddling trip was taken to Richmond from San Rafael, but this short trip ended up being a really big step in the right direction for what is known as the San Francisco Bay Water Trail. This is a network of camping and launching spots serving paddlers in the area.

Three kayakers paddled across a span of five miles, crossing the bay toward Point Pinole Regional Shoreline, which is in Richmond. This made them the first ever visitors to this brand new campground for the Bay's "Bay Water Trail" ever since its creation was authorized in the year 2005 by lawmakers in California.

The group camp was developed by the East Bay Regional Park District. This is the first shoreline group camp, and it is developed inside the sheltered concrete and earth walls of a long forgotten dynamite bunker where back in 1959, commercial explosives manufacturing had come to an end.

According to Bo Barnes, who is a veteran paddler, it has taken some time to really get the water trail moving, but this camp is exactly what paddlers have been looking for. The San Francisco Bay happens to be the largest wilderness in the entire Bay Area, and paddlers are looking for more water access points that will allow them to make use of it.

The campground is not actually scheduled to be opened on an official basis until a dedication ceremony on October 24, but the paddlers that visited from Bay Access came to visit the campgrounds on Monday, and they stayed nearby, becoming the first campers to experience the area so far. Paddlers as well as park officials have both said that this brand new campground is a truly prime addition to this Bay Water Trail.

The group camp is located close to a eucalyptus grove which is just south from the popular fishing pier in the park. It offers basic amenities, including water, a fire pit, bathrooms, a cooking grill and a quiet and scenic setting that takes you away from the busy freeways and roads. The campground is also obviously near the bay, which is an expanse of approximately 470 square miles of bay surrounded by nine different counties.

With all of the beauty here, who needs to travel to Hawaii? It is easy to just spend a week vacationing here and paddling around on the bay.

The group is experiencing just that this week, spending six days on a trip paddling around the bay. They have compartments in their kayak hulls that are allowing them to carry food, sleeping bags and clothes. This is not a trip that beginner paddlers should attempt because there are winds, currents and waves that are making traveling like this dangerous, according to safety experts. Still, a kayaker that is experienced can easily paddle both far and wide, enjoying the wildlife and the solitude here.
