No matter what age your boat is, if you don’t take care of it, it’s going to go downhill quickly. So many of us get wrapped up in the process of purchasing and using a boat that we forget about the important maintenance items that have to done. If your boat is looking a little less than ship shape, this book promises to help you out.
The premise of this book is more from the perspective of purchasing an older boat and fixing it up, but the tips are the same regardless of what you’re working with. The author actually purchased a very run down boat and instead of ripping everything out and starting over, he decided to clean it and refresh it first. What a difference it made, too! Some simple elbow grease and a few coats of paint can make any boat look better and it certainly is much more cost effective.
While these tips won’t help much if your boat is truly dilapidated, they are useful for those interested in restoration and basic maintenance issues. One of the most interesting facets of the book is that the author is a former chemical engineer. He puts his experience to good use by letting you know which type of chemicals and cleaners are going to be most effective for a particular job. This was something that we really hadn’t seen covered before and it made for fascinating reading. You really don’t think about the type of cleaner you’re using and whether or not it will get the job done, so this section was very worthwhile.
When it comes to keeping a boat clean, few realize how their maintenance may affect future performance. As the author puts it, a boat is made up of thousands of parts. If they are all dirty or maintenance has been sketchy, sooner or later something is going to break down. It’s much easier to stop a problem before it occurs, and you’ll have pretty much everything you need to know right here to get your boat in working order.
The tone of the book is engaging and even though the subject may be a bit dry for some, we found it was actually a very entertaining read. The author has a great talent for story telling and breaking tasks down and put it to good use here.
Overall, this book may not be for everyone, but if you are a restorer, or your boat has seen better days, it’s the perfect fit. We recommend the title to any boat owner, simply because there are times when you’re really going to have to buckle down and swab that boat out. With this book, you’ll know exactly what cleaners to use and you’ll pick up some great techniques to get the job done. We have nothing but high praise for this book and it made for some very interesting and useful reading.
