Boating and Fishing Glossary Continued

castingBass Assassin - This is the brand name for a variety of jerk bait options that are made out of soft plastic.

Bass Boat - This is a shallow-draft boat that was designed in order to be used in modern bass fishing competitions.

Bar - In a river this refers to a long, but shallow ridge that can sometimes be a great place for fishing.

Barb - A sharp point on the tip of a fishing hook that points back at the loop of the hook that is intended to keep a fish hooked.

Barbless - This refers to a hook that has no barb, either through design or by later removal of the barb. Depending on the size of the hook, the barb can be flattened by pliers, cut off, or filed down.

Bay - This is a significant shoreline indentation that you can find on a large body of water, such as a lake for example.

Bead-Headed Midges - This is a variety of fly-fishing fly.

Bedding - In fishing terms, this refers to fish that are bedding while the spawning season is happening.

Bell Sinker - A weight used in fishing that is shaped like a bell.

Belly Boat - This is the trademarked name for a variety of single person boats based around an inner tube meant for fishing in calm waters.

Benthic - A term to refer to things found or happening on, or just above the floor of a body of water.

Biology - The scientific field that deals with living organisms is known as biology.

Bite - This describes a situation when a fish has touched or grabbed the bait solidly enough so that the angler can feel it.

Bite Indicator - This is a device used to signal the angler when there is a bite on the line. These are frequently used by anglers that are bottom fishing. The signal can work with anything that draw attention to itself. A bell attached to the tip of a rod is a common indicator, and a small LED light similarly attached to a rod is a good indicator for fishing while it is dark, and there are plenty of commercially available devices as well.

Biomass - Within a specific area, biomass is the measurement of the total amount of all living matter combined, or it can refer to the amount or number of a specific species.

Black Bass - The common name for several members of the sunfish family, including both small and large mouth bass.

Blind Cast - This is a cast made without a specific target in mind.

Bluebird Skies - Beautiful blue skies that are bright and sunny, but which unfortunately make it more difficult to catch fish.
