Apache Trout - Native to the White Mountains area located in the east of central Arizona, this is one of the two species of trout native to the state. It is a yellow-gold color on the body that has sparse spots that may go beneath the lateral line and bold, dark markings decorating the tail and dorsal fins. This trout is legally listed as threatened, but there are a few areas where they can be caught legally.
Artificial Flies and Lures - This refers to any device that is wholly man-made designed to attract fish with visual stimuli. Any lure that uses food stuffs, natural or artificial does not fall into this category.
Attractant - A scent that is added to a lure to improve its effectiveness, they are available in solid, liquid, and powdered varieties.
Back Cast - The portion of a cast where the rod and line are away from the direction that the cast will go. In fly fishing there may be multiple back casts made to draw out more line and to improve the precision of a cast.
Backing - This refers to any variety of line that is used to partly fill a reel prior to spooling the primary line. This is generally used by anglers fishing for bass or fly fishermen using polymer or the newer thread type lines.
Backlash - This happens when a reel with a revolving spool overruns, this will make the line to tangle as it comes surging out of the reel.
Back-Trolling - This is a technique for dragging a lure through the water using a boat with a motor. One of the most used methods is to have a specially made trolling motor mounted to the front of the boat to slowly push the boat backwards while trolling the bait from the front of the boat. For catching fish like suspended crappies, whether in the summer or the winter, back trolling using a slow start and stop method.
Back-Wash - When a boat's wake hits a stationary object, like rocks, other boats, or a steep shore, it will bounce back and can cause turbulent water.
Backwater - A shallow portion of a river that is often separated from the main body of the river by some sort of obstacle like a sand bar. An oxbow is a name for a large, isolated backwater.
Bag Limit - This is normally a daily limit that is placed on the quantity of fish that are legally allowed by an angler.
Bass - The common name for a variety of fish, including fresh and salt water species that are frequently sought after by anglers. The species that are known as small and large mouth bass are commonly known as bass, but are in fact part of the sunfish category. Yellow, striped, and white bass belong to the perch family and called the true bass.
