In every area of the state of California, you will find an abundant supply of lakes rife with fish that are waiting to be caught. All told, California has more than 3000 different lakes, reservoirs, streams and other excellent bodies of water that are available to the avid angler who is looking for a good challenge and some excellent fish. With all of that water, it should not be difficult to find a nice, quiet and enjoyable lake that you can relax next to, casting a line in to catch your lunch or dinner.

No matter where you go in the state of California, you should have no trouble finding a fishing lake. Great fishing is always available right at your fingertips regardless of whether you are looking for something like Lake Almanor in Northern California, or Silverwood Lake in southern California. If you are an avid angler looking for enjoyable and challenging lakes, consider these highlights:

Fishing Lakes in Northern California -

One lake that is known for providing tremendous trout fishing is a lake known as Almanor, which is located in Chester, California. Most anglers can easily land their limit in only a couple of hours by visiting this unique Northern California lake. Here you will easily find trout ranging from three to five pounds. You could fish all day using catch and release, and never have a single boring fish moment while visiting Lake Almanor.

Another excellent Northern California fishing lake is Sardine Lake in the Tahoe National Forest, which is close to Sierra City. This is a pristine lake for California fishing, which is divided into two portions, upper and lower. Upper Sardine Lake is quite the noteworthy fishing spot, and Lower Sardine Lake is regularly regarded as a fishing nirvana, as no swimming is allowed and the water is intended solely for fishing. On a sunny day, you can see straight to the bottom of this beautiful lake.

Fishing Lakes in Central California -

If your favorite fish to catch is bass, then consider Bass Lake which is in Oakhurst in Central California. Bass are definitely the fish of the day every day in this beautiful lake, which is relatively close in proximity to the well known Yosemite National Park. Take a day off and visit the Giant Sequoias, then spend your afternoon landing trophy bass on a stunning lake.

Lake Isabella in Kernville in Central California is another stunning lake. Here you will find less shade trees and foliage, so things stay a little warmer than most lakes. At an elevation of almost 2600 feet above sea level, you can expect a completely different fishing experience here. Fishing is still excellent in Lake Isabella, and once you're through you can visit the nearby Sequoia National Forest in mere minutes.

French Gulch Marina is located on Lake Isabella, CA

Phone: 760.379.8774

Average Water Depth: The levels at Lake Isabella tend to fluctuate, particularly during dry years. We recommend calling ahead for the current level before you arrive.

Marine Standby Channel: At this time, the marina does not monitor any radio channels. However, you can reach them by cellphone at the number listed above.

Is there a pumpout service?

No, the marina does not offer this service. We recommend emptying your tanks before you arrive.

Is there a fuel dock?

Not at this location, however there are other marinas on the lake that do provide fuel.

What kind of services are available?

The marina offers a small mini mart where you can stock up on snacks as well as bait and tackle. There are no grocery stores in the immediate area, but there are a few in the nearby towns. The marina offers restrooms, but does not have a shower facility or a laundry facility at this time.

Can guests use the facility?

Yes, guests are welcome to use the docks. It is best to call ahead before you plan to arrive to ensure that they will have enough space for you. There is a fee for use, depending on how long you need to use the docks.

What you need to know:

In addition to their docks, the marina also rents numerous boats. If you don't feel like bringing your own, chances are they will be able to accommodate your needs. We've included their rental fee schedule below as well as their usual charge for docking.

There are also numerous camp sites located on the lake if you are planning on staying for longer than one day. The rates are very reasonable and we found the sites to be very well maintained. The staff is incredibly helpful here and it was nice to see that you could rent just about any type of equipment you could need for a great day on the lake. Please note that if you do plan to dock or rent a boat, you will need a California state permit to do so. The marina offers these permits at the main office.

Is there a boat ramp? Yes, a boat ramp is located on site. There is a small fee required to use the launch.

Average Water Depth: Lake Isabella can change dramatically in depth. It is best to call ahead before you arrive to check the current levels.

Marine Standby Channel: At this time you can only reach the marina by phone.

Is there a pumpout service?

No, there is no pumpout service at this time. It is best to empty your tank beforehand since this is a closed off lake.

Is there a fuel dock?

While the marina does not have any fuel, there are several spots around the lake where you can purchase what you need. Please note that if you do rent a boat, you will need to arrange for the gasoline for it. We have included more information on this policy below.

What kind of services are available?

The marina offers restrooms, but no shower or laundry options available. There is a small mini mart on site that doubles as a bait and tackle shop.

Can guests use the facility?

Yes, guests can use the docks, but there is a daily fee, depending on how long you stay.

What you need to know:

This is a friendly little marina that is well kept and great to use. While they don't have a lot of features, they make up for it in pricing. The yearly docking fee is very reasonable, and they also offer daily, weekly or monthly rates. We found this to be one of the most economical places to dock your boat all year round. If you make frequent trips to Lake Isabella, you may want to consider this option.

This is a great lake for fishing and there are plenty of activities for the entire family. There are campsites near by and we found that they were very clean and well maintained. This is a great spot to spend a weekend or even an entire week. If you don't feel like bringing your own boat, they do offer rentals at very reasonable rates. They do require that anyone using a boat have a valid California state permit, but these can be purchased on site if you don't already have one. Overall, we found this to be a great marina and we look forward to visiting Lake Isabella again in the future.

Is there a boat ramp? Yes, the marina does offer a ramp, but there may be a small fee for use.
