California Fishing Report: May 29, 2009

lake-amadorThe Feather River, which runs into the Sacramento Bay, is experiencing a number of schools milling around the confluence, and more just up from there between Boyd's Pump and Shanghai Bend. You can fish here early or late for the best results, but make sure to bring the right bait for the large herring in the area, including pink or green plastic grub tails and mini leadheads and fish with a light line.

Discovery Park, just down river from Feather will offer 40-fish outings according to Bob Sparre. In a period of only a couple of hours he managed to land 20 shad. If you are looking for deeper crowds and some of the better fishing in the area, you may want to consider visiting Herrington and Gristmill, as well as Upper Sunrise and Goeth Park which are all reachable from here.

Lake Amador experienced a 7,000 pound plant of Trout on Tuesday, which is likely going to be the last one of the season. Nightly fishing has been excellent for trout and bass alike, and bank anglers fishing using power bait have done especially well with Trollers pulling Rapalas.

The Camanche is no longer experiencing Trout plants, but you will still find plenty of rainbows and trollers, especially in the morning and then again in the evening, especially approximately 20 feet and 40 feet below the surface. Bass are also active, especially between 15 and 20 feet below, and near the rocky drop offs in the Lancha Plana, the Camanche Arm and both Dikes 1 and 2. Catfish action is also improving significantly with each day.

Lake Chabot is offering trout fishing, especially at Bass Cove and Indian Cove. You should come prepared to fish with power eggs and power bait for the best fishing. Bass fishing is also doing very well in this area with several 10lb bass fish surfacing last week. Raccoon Point is offering solid catfish fishing as well right now.

featherriverAt Contra Loma you will find some fairly decent trout fishing, especially when fishing with bait around Channel Point. The bass are taking lures especially well around the boat ramp as well as Channel Point but there have not yet been any catfish plants.

When fishing at Davis, the right way to go is trolling as guides are catching as many as 40 trout in a single day. The water temperature is ideal at around 66 degrees near the surface, and the best trolling depth was around 12 feet in 20-foot deep water and only 6 feet in water of less than 20 feet. The best lures to use here are the red rainbow Runner and the Dick nite.

Trout fishing has been good at Del Valle, especially when it comes to trout fishing in the Narrows as well as in Heron Bay. You can find fish here that range between 5 lb and 11 lb, though most fall into the 1 lb to 2 lb class. Salmon are beginning to appear near the south end and catfish are being found throughout the lake.

The best action at Lafayette is bluegill fishing, especially if you come prepared with red worms. You will also find catfish throughout the lake, trout near the south end of the lake and plenty of bass spread throughout the lake.

New Melones offers some excellent bass fishing, especially if you come prepared with topwater lures for use in the morning as well as the evening, and then Senkos during the day time. Catfish are becoming much more common as the year progresses. You will also find plenty of small kokanee in the main part of the lake.

new-melonesHowden Cove near the east side of Los Vaqueros is producing plenty of trout and bass. You will do especially well here if you are a shore angler, especially if you are fishing past the rock wall or in the South Cove which is beginning to produce trout.

Other lakes that are worth checking out include Pardee, which is full and seems to be spilling over with trout and kokanee, San Pablo which is seeing a slowing in trout fishing but which is still experiencing plenty of bass and catfish, Shadow cliffs which has more than 1,500 lbs going in this week and significantly more planned for next week and Quarry Lakes where trout fishing is picking up after a recent plant, and plenty of catfish are active as well.

If rivers are more your thing, check out Iron Gate Dam in the Klamath, where trout fishing has been successful, especially with stone flies and caddis. The Russian river has just the right conditions for Shad, especially at the Hacienda Bridge and Johnson's Bridge. The lower end of the Sacramento river is offering excellent Shad fishing, especially at the mouth of the Feather as well as the American. Shad can be fished successfully as far up as Chico, and you may also find stripers between Sacramento and Verona.

Frank's Tract delta is offering decent Bass fishing, with most fish falling between 1lb and 2lb with the occasional 5lb fish. There is also a frog bite that is beginning to take place. Trolling in the Rio Vista is ideal as the water is in good shape, offering excellent Sturgeon fishing. The black bass at Tracy has turned on here, offering fish of 3 lbs and up. Striped bass fishing is a little slower, but you will still find plenty of catfish to be had. The Mildred island area is also offering black bass fishing with at least somewhat of a chance of catch striped bass, crappie and bluegill as well. Under the willow sweepers and around the docks you may also find plenty of carp and catfish.

The upcoming weekend is likely to be teeming with eager boaters and fishermen, but luckily there is plenty of fishing to be had by all.
