The lake is however open to boating and fishing and is a popular destination for those looking to enjoy the peaceful tranquility of nature. The fishing is very good and boaters appreciate the calm waters.

The relative seclusion means that the lake is never overcrowded. Although it is quite popular, most boaters find that they have more than enough room and plenty of peace and quiet during their stay here. This is a popular backcountry hiking location, but the enforced rules keep everything pretty peaceful.

What You Need to Know:

Lake management states: "Huntington Lake is one of California's premier sailing lakes. Nearly five miles long, this lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides and contained on its western end by three dams. On summer days, hot air from the central San Joaquin Valley expands and rises up the canyon, forcing cool air that has settled above the lake at night into the mountains above. This thermal effect produces consistent afternoon westerly winds averaging 15 mph - ideal for sailing. Boat launching facilities, mooring and rentals are available at several marinas. A public boat launching ramp is located between College and Deer Creek Campgrounds. There is a fee for parking vehicles and trailers at the boat ramp."

Camping regulations:

"There are seven public campgrounds at Huntington lake which include: Upper Billy Creek, Lower Billy Creek, Catavee, Deer Creek, Kinnikinnick, College and Rancheria. At Badger Flat above Huntington Lake is a group campsite which is available to reserve. To make reservations contact www.recreation.gov or by phoning 1.877.444.6777. Reservations must me made at least one day in advance. There are also three picnic areas on the north side of the lake for those who choose to visit for the day. About the Lake:

Florence Lake was built in the early 1900's as part of a hydroelectric project. Nearby Huntington Lake was also constructed for this purpose. Today, both lakes are popular destinations for boaters that are looking to experience some tranquility and the beauty of mother nature. The clear waters are a treat and make fishing even easier.

The lake was named for Florence Starr, the sister of the famous mountain climber Walter Starr.  The project that was originally envisioned in 1886 is still being carried out today as Florence Lake is an integral part of the local hydroelectric plant.

There is ferry service across the lake, which is very popular with hikers and sightseers. There is also a store at the lake that is completely stocked and makes it easy to get by for a couple of days if you plan to camp nearby. Day use is the most common method however, and the whole family can easily find something to do while you're here. Please keep in mind that if you do plan to drink the water here it must be purified.

Please be advised that the lake does have a 15mph speed limit for all boats.

Numerous trout can be found in the lake and the exceptionally clear waters make it very easy to spot your fish. It doesn't take long at all to reach your limit simple because the fishing is so good here.

The lake has a special warning for campers:
