Location: The lagoon area of the Miller Knox regional shoreline in Contra Costa County's East Bay Regional Park- The Hike: A single mile loop through park land located near Point Richmond
- Distance: This is a 1 mile walk that makes a full loop
- Category and Difficulty: This is an easy walk on a perfectly flat, paved path.
- Exposure: This is a relatively exposed hike, with some small pockets of shade.
- Traffic: There is moderate traffic on this hike.
- Trail Surface: This trail is completely paved.
- Walk Time: 30 minutes or less
- Season: This is a hike you can enjoy throughout the year.
- Trailhead Coordinates: 37°54'59.89"N // 122°23'2.94"W
Amenities: Gas, Pay Phones, Stores and Restaurants within 0.6 miles located in Point Richmond. No camping is available.
Rules: All trails here are multi-use and pets are permitted on grounds. The park is open between 5 o'clock am and 10 o'clock pm.
Fees: There are no fees for parking or entrance to the trail.
Map: A good map for this region is the AAA San Francisco Bay Region map. West Contra Costa Communities is another good map for this purpose.
Accommodations: There is plenty of parking available for this trail. There are drinking water fountains and restrooms available throughout the park and both are wheelchair accessible. There are several handicapped designated spots for parking and much of the park is designed to be handicapped accessible as well, including the western area of the park around the lagoon.
Public Transportation: There is no direct transportation to the park, but there is an AC Transit bus that drops off within walking distance. Visit the AC Transit website for the schedule for Bus #73.
How to Get There: Fro Contra Costa County's Interstate 580, take exit #8 to Canal and Garrard. Drive south toward Canal. If you exited toward the west, turn left at the ramp base. If you exit to the east, turn right at the ramp base. Turn right upon reaching West Cutting and take a left at the first stop sign that you encounter to reach South Garrard. You will drive through a tunnel, and then another 0.3 miles or so before you reach the first entrance to the park which is on the right side.
Notes: If you are planning a day long trip, keep in mind that when you are close to the water it can become windy and you should dress accordingly. Wearing layers is definitely a good way to go since you can add and remove as needed. If the single mile loop isn't enough to get your blood pumping, there is plenty to do across the street where there are a number of hiking paths that are more suitable for adults than children. There is plenty to do and see along the lagoon here, and if you enjoy the view you can take the loop hike several times and make a day of it.
