I went salmon fishing off the Duxbury reef with Captain Perry Kerson and deckhand Mikey of Sea Turtle Sport Fishing. Had an awesome time. You cannot find a better 6 pack fishing boat in the bay area. Perry grew up on the bay water so he is extremely knowledgeable of the water, the fish, and the history. No matter what type of bay/ocean fishing you are looking for the Sea Turtle is your boat. Mikey was the best mate I have had the pleasure of experiencing. He rigged the poles, checked the baits, changes the baits, kept the boat clean, and sprang into action when the fish hit. Give them a call if you want to go fishing (415) 531-3706.
If you are unaware, prior to this season, the last 2 salmon seasons have been closed due to poor fish numbers for salmon in the bay area. This seasons numbers haven't been much better, but they are having a season. Might not be a season next year. Salmon Water Now.
The weather was perfect. The ocean was calm. There were 100+ boats at the reef. Unfortunately, the fish didn't get the memo. The chatter on the radios let us know everyone was having the same problem. We only saw 2 fish boated outside the reef. Regardless, Perry and Mikey worked hard all morning (see checking/changing baits above). Skunked in the morning, Perry reached into his bag of tricks: the green run.
We trolled the green run, a run from the old days starting at the buoy and ending inside the reef heading towards a green building (hence green run) on the hill above Stinson beach. Along the way you go over a couple rock piles. Nobody followed us. Once we were over the reef a grey whale passed between us and the fleet. Awesome, but it gets better. We hooked up near the end of the run and caught a 18-20 pound hatchery fish. Perry was there first. Did I mention you should call him if you want to go fishing? (415) 531-3706
Alas, a slow day is a slow day and that was our only salmon. However we had some fun when the fly rod went off. I jumped into action behind the mate Mikey who handed the rod to me. I had never used a fly rod until this very moment. 20 minutes later I had landed my first fish on a fly rod. I large bat ray that was foul hooked in the wing. It was a blast and a hell of a fight. As disappointed as I was that it wasn't a big salmon, I am sure glad I was able to land the fish. I would have been inconsolable had I fought a giant for 20 minutes and lost it sight unseen. I have a cool story, a good fight, and it was NOT the one that got away.
So what the heck is the thresher picture? The week before Perry caught this thresher while trolling for salmon. Apparently, they foul hooked that one in the tail and had to bring it in backwards. That must have been a surprise.
