Fishing and Boating Glossary

grasscarpA.C. Plug - This is the brand name of a large top water jointed wooden trout lure.

Acidity - The amount of acid in a substance, usually a water soluble one. This is measured on the pH scale where a substance that is neutral, which means it is neither an acid nor base, is a 7 and lower numbers acidic.

Action - This is a term that describes the way a rod performs while in use. A rod with fast action will quickly return to being straight after it has been flexed. It also covers the strength of the rod with a heavy rod being stiffer and a light rod much more flexible.

Active Fish - This refers to fish that are actively feeding and much more aggressively striking at lure.

Adipose Fin - On some species of fish there is a fatty fin that is located in between the tail and dorsal fins and this is the fin that is known as the Adipose fin. .

Air Bladder - Many bony fish have a sac full of gas located in the upper portion of the body cavity right below the spine. This organ is design to help balance out the weight of bones and other heavy tissues.

Algae - This is a very basic plant, generally a single celled organism, that is very common to find in water of all types including freshwater and saltwater environments alike.

Alkalinity - This is the term that is used for the measurement of bases in a solution, on the pH scale numbers higher than 7 indicate increasing alkalinity.

Amur - Also know as grass carp, or white Amur, this is a species of carp that lives in the Amur river of China and can grow to be up to 47 pounds. They feed on weeds and are so efficient they are often stocked in bodies of water to keep algae and weeds under control.

Anal Fin - This is an unpaired fin that is usually on the back end of the fish located behind the anus on the body's midline.

Anchovy - A species of ocean going bait fish that grows to a length of 4 inches to 8 inches. This is a popular bait to use at locations like Lake Mohave or Lake Powell for catching striped bass, it also an effective bait for catfish.

Angler - A person who catches fish using a rod and reel or fishing pole.

Angleworm - This is a term for an earthworm that is placed onto a fish hook while it is still alive.

Angling - This generally refers to sport fishing done using a line and hook for recreation.

Anti-Reverse - Mechanism that prevents many tangles by not allowing the reel to spin in the wrong direction.
