Fishing and Boating Lexicon Continued

catfishCarolina Rig Continued - In certain situations, such as the clear waters that are found in some reservoirs out in the west, or when the winter weather is making it a good idea to scale down in size, there is actually an alternative form of the rig that may work better. This variant uses a four to six inch lizard or worm bait that is trailing a simple split shot weight by somewhere between twelve inches and thirty inches, and uses the Texas style of rigging.

Carp - Introduced to the United States of America sometime late in the nineteenth century, the carp is actually a type of minnow rather than its own species. Generally this name is used in order to refer to the European common carp and not to refer to the grass carp, also known as amur, that are originally from the country of Asia.

Catch and Release - This is a way to partake in the sport of fishing without removing fish from the wild. After an angler has retrieved a fish they carefully remove the hook from the fish, being careful to handle the fish as little as possible to avoid injuring the fish or opening it up to infections, and release the fish back into the water. In some bodies of water, this is the only legal option that is available as a result of local regulations that are designed in order to protect the fish population in that area.

Catfish - This is a type of bottom feeding fish with a wide mouth and whisker like organs that are located on the sides of the mouth known as barbels which actually contain the fish's taste buds. There are many species of catfish such as channel, flathead, blue, yellow, and black. Not content with just fishing, the sport of catching them goes by cat fishing, and the people who catch them are cat fishers.

Channel - This is the term for the bed of a small body of water like a river or stream. In a reservoir this term can be used to describe an underwater river or stream channel.

Chugger - This is the name for a type of plug that is used for top water fishing. The lure will have a head that is cupped, or concave so that when the lure is sharply pulled it will make a splash. Chugging is the term for working the lure across the water while splashing it repeatedly.

Chum - Chum is a messy mixture of chopped up fish including the internal organs. To chum water means to throw chum into the water in order to lure more fish to the water being fished. When you leave a trail of it behind a moving boat that is a chum line.
