Fishing Report: April 16, 2010

Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville a halibut trip goes out on Saturday so put your reservations in now. Last weekend’s salmon trip wasn’t very productive with over a dozen fishermen coming back with only 4 fish. Salmon have been biting well at Bodego Bay, though, and some are getting their limits. Fish are ranging between 10 and 20 pounds each.

At Tracy, nothing is biting particularly well, but all the fish are biting now and then. Striped bass, catfish and black bass all get pulled out one or two at a time, but there’s no rhyme or reason to it. Pressure has increased at Walnut Grove and the striper bite is improving.

Rio Vista hotspots seem to be Cache Slough for sturgeon and Decker and Sherman Islands for striped bass. But don’t be surprised if you don't get a bite and hear that a hotspot is somewhere else one minute, and then another the next. There’s no predicting the fish in these waters right now. Yozuris are working for trollers better than others. Small striped bass are biting well at Frank’s Tract. Stick near the banks for black bass that are spawning.

At Suisun Bay, poor weather cleared the water of anglers last weekend but at least one trip went out mid-week that hauled a limit of stripers, so this weekend looks good to go. San Pablo Bay is showing a better halibut bite than lately, especially at Red Rock, Paradise and Southampton. The biggest halibut this week was about 30 pounds, with most around 10 to 15 pounds. The Pumphouse is the usual good spot for sturgeon taking grass shrimp and ghost shrimp as well as some bass.

At Trinity/Lewiston, the cold weather and steady rain have managed to keep the bass slow and uninterested in bait or lures. As soon as the weather clears and the temperatures warm up the water, the bass bite should get back on track.

San Francisco Bay was a great halibut spot but wind and poor weather has muddied the water. Some near the Bird Cage are using anchovies and herring and are getting a few bites when the tide goes out. Pacifica is suffering under slow crabbing and a non-existent striper bite.

Trout

Lake Amador has a good biting supply of crappie, trout and bass right now, with the crappie hovering low, up to 20 feet down, and the bass and trout biting for those fishing from the bank.

The San Pablo Reservoir is one the rise and murky. Bass are preparing to spawn, but trout are hiding and sluggish in the dark water. The Lafayette Reservoir took 2 1,000-pound trout plants this week and hopefully that will improve the biting as it’s been dreadfully slow over the last several days. Loch Lomond is at least offering up a few more bass than it has lately, with one weighing close to 17 pounds caught and released this week.

At Berryessa, stick near Big Island and the Narrows near the rocks for spotted and smallmouth bass. Go north about the island for largemouth bass. The water’s coming up and it’s cold, but despite those things the bass are biting well in the spots, and scattered throughout the lake.

Don Pedro is a good spot for both salmon and trout right now. Middle Bay and Fleming Bay are good for rainbow trout. Hang your lures up to 25 feet down to get them. Humdingers are also working, as are Slimfins. Powerbait and spinners worked for some this week, too. Fleming Bay, along with Mexican Gulch, is also good for King salmon right now, and Kokanee are 30 feet down around Big Oak Island and Jenkins Hill. If you’re looking for salmon, stick to things like anchovies or shad.

Rapalas are still the best choice at Pardee, especially if you fish them shallow only down to about 10 feet. Brown trout weighing as much as 12 pounds have been caught in the dam area so hang around there for the most favorable biting conditions. Shadow Cliffs is probably a better bet for trout as they’re biting well, and most are big. A plant goes in next week, but in the meantime try spinners with nightcrawlers or Power Bait.

Lake Shasta is full of small fish that bite well, but few good sized ones. Digger Bay may be the best spot for salmon right now. Bass aren’t biting well. Anchovies, worms and shad are what anglers are turning to currently. Quarry Lakes is overfull and murky thanks to a lot of algae, and that’s keeping fish from biting hardly at all.

Lake Chabot is clearing in the central part but still murky near the bank and the creeks. Try near Coots Landing for trout because three big ones came out of there this week, ranging from 5 to 9 pounds. Clear Lake anglers are having good luck with plastics are the docks and minnow in many places. You might try lures over the weekend and early into next week if the water keeps warming up.

The Cowboy, Howden and Peninsula Coves are the best places to look for trout at Los Vaqueros as some are catching them there, but the bite’s pretty scattered and inconsistent elsewhere. Nightcrawlers are giving the best results, with shore fisherman having good results with Power Bait and Eggs. Scented bait works best.

At Collins, thanks to warming weather, fish are starting to bite well. A rainbow trout weighing 10 pounds was caught this week, with over 1,000 pounds of trout going in during the week. Bass fishermen are also doing fairly well.

At Del Valle, there are no real hot spots to speak of this week, as anglers are catching fish all over the area. Trout weighing 15 to 17 pounds were pulled out this week, so there are some big fish biting. Catfish are starting to bite more and more, but the bass seem to be in hiding. Try nightcrawlers and bright Power Bait for the best luck right now.
