Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut
At both Berkeley/Emeryville and Pillar Point, you can catch a salmon fishing trip on either Saturday or Sunday. Crabbing has been poor because of shifty weather patterns, but there are salmon coming out of these waters. Salmon fishing starts on Saturday at Monterey. Sand dabbing and mackerel fishing have been pretty productive, with some salmon being pulled out, too.
Frank's Tract is a good place for striped bass, particular trollers though shore fishermen aren't doing too poorly. Some black bass are biting too, especially for those using swimbaits and plastic. A 32-pound striped base came out this week, so there are some large fish waiting here as well as some 9 and 10 pound bass. Try Yozuris for the best luck with stripers. At Tracy, striped bass aren't biting well but black bass are hovering near the shore.
Rio Vista is inconsistent for striped bass right now, with no real hot spots to speak of. The bass are heading upstream, and where they'll bite next is anyone's guess. The usual hot spots for sturgeon, Cache Slough and the Powerlines, are still producing well.
San Pablo Bay is inconsistent for sturgeon right now, but improving as far as halibut fishing goes. Paradise Pier is the current hotspot, with four decent-sized halibut coming out there this week. Trolling is best if you're looking for striped bass, as few are biting for trollers. And crabs are still eating the bait before the fish can get to it if you fish too deep, so stick to the top few feet of water.
San Francisco Bay has jack smelt near the banks the docks, with the biggest concentration of halibut right now in the South Bay. Anchovies are the top bait, especially in places like the Bird Cage and the A-Frame.
Striped bass were easy to catch not long ago, but over the last week the bite has slowed and almost stopped altogether. Those getting stripers are just the lucky exception. But sturgeon are still biting well, particularly around Buoys 2-6 again this week. The Martinez Pier and the Glomar are also offering up some decent-sized sturgeon.
Right now Pacifica is under an advisory due to the high surf, so stay clear of the beaches and the pier. Bass weren't biting before the surf picked up, but crabbing was good from the pier. This should continue once the warnings have passed.
Trout
The San Pablo Reservoir is still slow for trout, but with the rising water level the crappie and bass bite are improving. The Lafayette Reservoir had a trout plant on Monday, but isn't as great a spot for trout as it was the week before. Some are getting their limits and more aren't getting anything. Some catfish are biting, but that's inconsistent, and the bass really aren't moving or biting at all.
Lake Camanche is firing on all cylinders again this week, with bass, trout, crappie and catfish all biting. Trollers are catching a lot of trout and bass, and bass are responding very well to plastics. The South Shore Pond is, as usual, a hotspot for these fish. Those who're looking for catfish should use chicken livers as bait.
Nightcrawlers are helping trout fisherman at Pardee, as are flashers. Trollers are having the best luck, but fish are biting for shore anglers, too. Those on the bank should use Power Bait. Bass are moving upriver and are biting for swimbaits. At Quarry Lakes, some catfish weighing up to 7 pounds were caught this week, with an 8-pound trout being the largest trout caught through the week. The hotspots right now are some of the usual productive spots, near the Peninsula and Fishermen's Row.
Lake Chabot isn't giving many their limits, but some of the trout that are coming out of the lake are on the big side. Over a thousand pounds of trout have gone in over the last couple of weeks, so look for the biting to improve even though the water is muddy. Stick to the shallow water if you're looking for bass.
About 1200 pounds went in at Los Vaqueros late in the week. Salmon are being caught here and stripers are biting pretty well. Lagunitas got a 500-pound plant of trout this week, while Bon Tempe got twice that, so the bite should improve in both spots. Clear Lake is suffering from some inconsistent weather and cold water which is keeping the bass from biting. Don't bother with lures right now. Stick to minnows, swimbaits and jigs right now, and fish in the shallow spots for the best luck with bass.
Contra Loma is offering up some catfish at the boat ramp especially for those using Power Bait. It's also working for trout, along with nightcrawlers. Fishermen hanging around Channel Point are getting the most trout. The water's muddy, and when it clears the bite should improve even more. At New Melones, trout aren't biting, but the bass bite is fair.
At Del Valle, the biggest fish this week didn't measure up to last week's 19+ pound striper. But catfish and trout that weight over 10 pounds each were pulled out over the weekend, so clearly there are some decent-sized fishing waiting here. A thousand pounds of trout went in early in the week, so by the weekend lots of smaller fish should be biting. The east beach is still a hot spot, just as it was last week for shore fishermen. Those who prefer to stay on the bank should also try for trout around the campgrounds.
Lake Shasta is a good spot for bass and salmon this week. Anchovies are a good bait to use as are swimbaits and Senkos. Fish deep, down to about 60 feet and for kings, but in the upper 25 feet for bass, and stick around the dam for salmon.
At Shadow Cliffs, stick around the Stanley shore area for trout. A couple 10-pounders came out of this spot during the week. Last Tuesday, a 750-pound plant went in, so prospects should improve.
