Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut
At Berkeley/Emeryville, trips are bringing in striped bass and halibut, though not in huge amounts. Five to eight halibut per trip, and just one striper per trip, were the rule last weekend.
Suisun Bay hasn’t been giving anglers any bass this week, but the Ozol is a perpetual hot spot for sturgeon. Even there only a few come out a day, it seems. Grass and ghost shrimp are giving anglers the best results right now. At San Pablo Bay, the weather’s supposed to be better this weekend which can only help the halibut bite. Few have been caught this week, but the forecast for the weekend hints that it might be better, not only for halibut but bass and sturgeon, too.
San Francisco Bay is holding steady with the halibut bite with anglers sticking to Oyster Point and Coyote Point pulling in at least a couple of dozen over the weekend. Striped bass have gone into hiding. Bodega Bay has a decent salmon bite right now, but Pillar Point is a waste of time.
Rio Vista probably won’t be worth much this weekend because the water’s muddy. Frank’s Tract is suffering from the same problem. Tracy might be a good spot for bass, especially around the Grand Line Canal. Last weekend’s black bass tourney was won with a 28-pound bag. At Pacifica, shore anglers are getting striped bass around the beaches. Crabbing has slowed down dramatically.
For river fishermen, the Lower Sacramento is cold and windy and not much is biting. The warmer weekend had angers doing pretty well, and the plan is for better weather this weekend, too. The Upper Sacramento is still a bit too cold for good biting.
Trout
Lake Amador keeps filling up and is just inches away from being full now, a huge jump over the 3 feet away from full it sat at last week. Shore anglers are having the best luck right now, particularly those using nightcrawlers and Power Bait. Some are also using Rapalas and flies. Trout are biting well thanks to weekly plants. Bass are starting to bite a little better.
The San Pablo Reservoir is the place to use bright colored Power Bait, with an improving trout bite and some larger trout coming out now, with a handful over 5 pounds caught over the weekend. The trout bit is definitely picking up even though the water got murky mid-week. Trollers are doing better than shore anglers. Â The Lafayette Reservoir is muddy in the central part of the lake and in the east, but the southern part seems to be clearing out. The lake is still getting extra plants each week, so some are getting their limits in trout, at least in the clearer parts of the lake.
At Los Vaqueros, this weekend looks to be great fishing weather, with many sticking to the Rock Wall and the South Cove because of the salmon that have been caught there this week. Trollers are doing pretty well right now, with some getting limits. Stripers and largemouth bass are starting to get more active, too.  Folsom is full of debris as it keeps rising, but it hasn’t slowed the bass bite down. Be careful if you troll.
Quarry Lakes is doing better for trout with the biggest as a 10-pound trout caught near the Peninsula this week. Fishermen are also hanging around Fishermen’s Row, because of the excellent biting there. A bass weighing almost 10 pounds was caught near the Peninsula this week, too. At Shadow Cliffs, a Tuesday plant of trout has helped the bite. Shore anglers are doing better than trollers, with a trout weighing 11 pounds caught on the first dock this week.
At Berryessa, the water level has stabilized a bit and the fish seem to be hanging in the shallow areas and near the surface of the water. Trollers are doing well on out in the central part of the lake and near Big Island. The bass bite is starting to pick up, but it still a way from being great.
At New Melones, the bite for trout, bass and salmon is completely scattered. There are no hot spots, and there’s no predicting when you might hit a small concentration of fish. The San Luis Reservoir is a good place for striped bass up to 7 pounds right now, particularly around Portuguese Cove.
Lake Almanor has warmed up to almost 50 degrees in spots which is helping the trout move. Brown and rainbow trout are biting pretty well and the salmon are on the move, too. If you’re looking to avoid a lot of congestion, tuck in at the USFS boat ramp near Prattville and stay away from the east shore, but do go there to fish once you’re in the lake. The bite’s started to really pick up, and trollers are optimistic that it’ll continue. The west side of the lake is also progressing nicely.
Lake Chabot is okay for trout with those using the standard nightcrawlers or Power Bait having the best luck. Bass are biting very well anywhere, but for the best trout bite stay around Indian Cove. Lake Camanche is offering up about the same results as last week, with trout biting better than bass, and the few bass that are biting taking plastics.
Contra Loma is still the place for bright Power Bait and nightcrawlers. Trout are responding to those. Catfish were biting those pretty well last week, but this week very few were caught. Trout anglers should hang around Channel Point Dock for the best bite. You might catch some Crappie at Clear Lake, but the bass bite has ground to a halt thanks to the cold weather and up and down temperatures.
At Del Valle, a 6-pound striped bass was caught this week which was a nice switch since most people fishing for bass are actually pulling out trout. They seem to be biting best for Power Worms and plastics. Those actually fishing for trout are doing okay, with fish in all sized being pulled out, though only two to three at a time. Catfish are starting to get a little more active.
