Fishing Report: August 13, 2010

Lakes/Saltwater

Anderson: Great spot for anyone looking for a strong bluegill bite or crappie bite. Head to the backside of the bridge for the best fishing in the area. Best catches are going to those using red worms and wax worms.

Berkeley: Rocky Point and Muir Beach had Salmon and Halibut, making them popular spots for the last week or so. Still a strong rock cod catch in the area.

Berryessa: Smallmouth bass are catching relatively easy in the area, with most of the fish found by those who get 30 feet under the surface of the water.

Camanche: Head to 40 feet under the water if you want to get the best trout bite. The best trout has been found at Little Hat Island as well as Hat Island. Bass fishing is still decent in the area, and catfish fishing has continued to stay strong.

Capitola: Those looking to catch some Halibut should head out to the Santa Cruz Harbor. Those who have found the most success have been using Squid.

Calero: South Bay Bass bite is better here than anywhere else. If you are planning on trying to fish topwater style, head out in the morning, or at night.

Chabot: Avoid the area during the day, as catfish is slow at best. Anyone looking for strong bass fishing should hit up Bass Cove, the Island, and out by Raccoon Point.

Clear: Head to the area more toward the evening if you want a strong bass bite. Crappie has been decent, as have catfish. The larger catfish are coming out at night.

Contra Loma: Fishing has been slow in the area, as there hasn’t been a plant of Catfish for over a month.

Coyote: Head to the flats or the boat ramp to find a strong crappie bite. Use red worms and wax worms to get the best bite possible.

Del Valle: Striper fishing has been great in the area, as has catfish fishing. The catfish bite will continue to be strong, thanks to the catfish planting that happens at least once a week.

Emeryville: Rock Fish has been hitting limits, and Halibut fishing has been relatively strong.

LaFayette: Fishing has been slow in the area. Trout have been caught, but catfish are few and far between. Head to the docks if you are looking to pick up some panfish.

Loch Lomond: The area has been slow this week because of the temperature of the water. Give the lake at least another week before you try to catch anything here.

Los Vaqueros: Stripers and Catfish have been biting pretty well over the last week, as have largemouth bass.

McAlpine: Head to this area in the morning if you are looking for a strong Trout bite. Bass are biting in the area, as are catfish. Bass are taking frogs while catfish are taking cutbaits.

Monterey: Rock Cod has been strong at Point Sur, making this a strong location for those looking to hit limits.

New Hogan: Those who are looking for some strong striper bite should head to the area. Deer Flat, The Dam, and Whisky Creek are the strongest spots in the area.

Pacifica: Striped bass has been somewhat decent. Half Moon Bay has had some bass.

Pardee: Head to the upstream area if you are looking to pick up a decent catch of bass. Small mouth and large mouth have been reported at relatively good weights. If you are looking for kokanee or trout, get at least 20 feet deep near the dam. Anyone looking for some catfish should head toward the south end of the lake.

Pillar Point: Shallow water is bringing in limits of Rockfish.

Quarry Lakes: The plants at Quarry Lakes have been useless to say the least. Biting is slow around Fishermen’s Row, and nearly non-existent anywhere else. Both catfish and trout are hiding.

San Pablo Bay: Halibut and striped bass is the best in this particular area, especially around Paradise.

San Francisco Bay: Halibut has been decent, as have been stripers.

San Luis Reservoir: Stripers are being found at the bridge and the forebay at check 12.

Santa Cruz: Rock Cod fishing has been strong. Halibut has been decent in the area as well. Head between Davenport and Capitola for the best chance of a strong bite.

Santa Margarita Lake: Those looking for bluegill or catfish in the 3 to 4 pound range are going to be happy with the area. Those who are looking for bass will be disappointing, as fishing for bass has been slow at best.

Shadow cliffs: Catfish limits are hitting in the area, making the third dock of Shadow Cliffs one of the best locations of the week.

UVAS: Catfish bite has been relatively decent, especially for those who are using live minnows.

Delta

Antioch: Striped bass are making a comeback in the area, especially around the pier.

Frank’s Tract: Those looking for a strong black-bass catch are going to want to head to the area. Striped pass are starting to pick up as well, especially those who are using frogs. Most of the fish that are being picked up are schoolie size.

Pittsburg: Striped bass fishing in the area has improved, but the fish are still relatively small.

Rio Vista: The Rio Vista bridge has been a hot spot, with an over 30 inch striped bass caught in the last week. Most of the bass that are being found in the area are round 8 pounds.
