Fishing Report: August 20, 2010

Lakes/Saltwater

Anderson: Fishing has been relatively weak in this area for the last week or so. While there are some small bass that are being caught, catches are few and far between. Look to fish near the bridge to get the best bite available.

Berkeley: Salmon fishing has been on and off over the last week. Halibut and Rock Cod have been somewhat decent in the area as well.

Berryessa: The latest temperature cool down has made fishing somewhat difficult in the area. Bass bite has been off and on, making this a difficult location for fishing this week.

Camanche: Those who are looking for a decent Catfish bite are going to find it here. Midday fishing is weak – head to the area early or late to get the best bite.

Capitloa: Smaller stripers have been in the area, especially near New Brighton and Capitola Pier. You’re going to have to get around 60 feet down to get Halibut here.

Chabot: Catfish are being caught in this area by those who use Mackerel as bait.

Calero: The mornings are producing some relatively decent bass fishing. Day fishing has been decent as well for those using frogs.

Chesbro: Head to the area at night to get the best Catfish possible. Crappie are being found near the structure and in the coves.

Contra Loma: The area has been weak at best over the last few weeks. Stay away from Contra Loma.

Coyote: One of the hottest spots for Bass fishing over the last few weeks. Crappie has been biting, as has bluegill, for those who are by the launch ramp and by the dam. Small minnows have been getting the best bites possible.

Del Valle: Catfish and Striped bass have been incredibly strong in the area this week, producing some great catches. Catfish are big this week thanks to the 750 pound plant that went in last week.

Emeryville: Those who are looking to get a lot of Rock Cod are going to want to head to the area.

Lafayette: Fishing has been slow in this area. Catfish is starting to improve, as there has been a stock in the area recently. Bluegill and Crappie has been decent on the docks on the west and south sides of the lake.

Loch Lomond: This area has been starting to pick up lately, as the bass bite and the bluegill bites are improving. Most of the bass that are being caught are relatively small, under 3 pounds.

Los Vaqueros: Rock Wall and Oak Point have been incredibly strong for bass fishing this week, with Striped Bass coming in at 15 pounds. There have been some 20 pounders caught. Head to the Mouth of Howden and the Peninsula coves to get the best Largemouth Bass catch. Those who are looking to hit up some good trout are going to want to head to the area next week: a plant of 1,200 will be going in soon.

McAlpine: In the morning, Trout fishing is relatively strong. Bass fishing is starting to grow in the area as well. Catfish are biting for those who are taking cut baits out to the water.

Monterery: People are generally getting cod limits in the area.

New Melones: Kokanee has been somewhat strong, but fishing has been somewhat slow in the area.

Pacifica: Striped bass are showing themselves near Linda Mar and Rockaway, but the area has been somewhat slow.

Pardee: Power Bait is bringing in a lot of trout, thanks to the plant that went in within the last week. Trout and Kokanee are being caught in the river arm and near the dam. Head to the south end if you are looking to get some strong Catfish bites.

Pillar Point: White Sea Bass and Halibut have been somewhat on and off. Not the best spot for fishing, but rock fish are biting somewhat strong.

Quarry Lakes: Plants of trout and catfish went in during the last week, but both types of fish are failing to bite on a regular basis. Give the area a week to improve before you head out to fish.

San Luis Reservoir: Striped bass are being found in the forebay. Use jumbo minnows to get the best striped bass in the area.

San Pablo Reservoir:
Regardless of the fishing conditions over the last week, head to the area for Catfish fishing. 2,400 pounds of catfish are going to be planted this week.

Santa Cruz:
Rock cod limits are being found in the area. Halibut are somewhat decent in between Davenport and Capitola.

Santa Margarita Lake: Somewhat decent fishing area for those looking for catfish, sunfish, and bluegill. Bass fishing has been slow at best in the area.

Suisun Bay: Sturgeon being caught in the area, but not too strong. Use frozen ghost shrimp to get the best bites available.

UVAS:
Catfish bite is somewhat decent, with some pulling in catches over 5 pounds.

Deltas

Franks Tract: Black Bass has been the main catch at Frank’s Tract. There are some stripers that are going to be caught in both the morning and late afternoon.

Rio Vista: Head near the Rio Vista Bridge and the Georgiana Slough to get the best striper fishing in the area.
