Let's take a look at how fishing's been so far this week.
Lake Fishing -
In Berryessa, the Kokanee are definitely being found and caught in good numbers for anyone that is trolling between 50 feet and 60 feet underneath the surface of the water. Bass fishing has been also decent, though not as decent as Kokanee fishing has been as of late. In the Camanche, the cat fish are certainly plentiful, especially along the north shore as well as the campgrounds at the peninsula. The bass are hitting along the entire shoreline both early and late during the day.
At Chabot, the bass fishing is definitely fair, but the prospects for catfish are better, especially in the early hours of the evening every day. Most of the fish have been easily falling in the two to three lb class. The north end of Clear lake is clearing up, and so fishing is definitely improving. The best tactic here is going to be to move until the point where you manage to locate fish, working the chosen area slowly using crank baits, drop shots and jigs until you manage to get lucky.
In Contra Loma, the catfish are taking night crawlers as well as chicken livers, especially around Channel Point. Many of the catfish that you are going to find out there are in the 1-lb class. At Davis, the best producers as of late have been fly fishing and trolling. Shore fishing has only been average as of late. The lake is currently at approximately 54 percent of its capacity. The boat ramp at Honker Cove has had adequate water levels for launching. Most of the boaters and the anglers on the shore are fishing out of Mallard Cove and the Island toward the dam on the south end because there are less floating weeds to contend with. Trolling is producing fish at about 30 feet to 40 feet deep. Fly fishing is producing limits for the fishermen using Pheasant Tail Nymphs at about five feet beneath an indicator, and the best area this week has been the northwest part of this lake. If you use power bait or worms from the shore you will experience fair fishing as well.
Trout fishing in Del Valle is continuing to be rather consistent, especially around the dam. The trollers are getting limits when they go down to about 30 feet using down riggers. The catfish in the lake are taking both stink baits and dough baits, especially in the narrows. You may also be able to find striped bass in this same area as well. In Lafayette, the bass and the catfish are definitely going to be the primary target to go for, and the best fishing action is coming from the catfish, especially during the morning hours.
Trout plants in Los Vaqueros are continuing, and the best place to get a bite is around the South Cove area. The best bait for your purposes here is going to be power bait in bright colors. Right now the shore anglers seem to be producing the boaters in this area. In New Melones, catfish is definitely the best bite you'll find. Kokanee are turning hooked jawed, and they have been so far reluctant to bite as of late. The bass fishing is also relatively slow for the season.
At Pardee, the trollers are able to get Kokanee and trout in smaller numbers while they are fishing in the narrows, the mouth of the river and also upstream, which is beginning at around the rock wall. The warmer water conditions are tending to send the fish much deeper than usual. With downriggers, you should be going about 30 feet to 60 feet deep, and you may even have to go deeper at times. It might be wise for you to try out a Copper Popper, tiger or silver behind a watermelon, silver and green dodger or Sep's silver. You may also try bugs and hoochies as well.
The San Pablo Reservoir is giving up catfish, especially with stink baits. The bass bite has been relatively fair if you're using plugs, swim baits or yamasekos. The weekly catfish plant at the Shadow Cliffs is keeping anglers plenty entertained. At Trinity and Lewiston, the bass fishing is relatively fair considering the low conditions and the warm water. Trout fishermen at the mouths of the tributaries are getting a good trout bite. The fishing in Lewiston has been best along the lake's upper end. At Quarry Lakes, you will find that the catfish bite is going to be best at dusk and dawn, and trout fishing is relatively slow this week.
River Fishing -
At Klamath, the salmon and the steelhead are moving down into the river's lower end, and there are plenty of half-lb steelhead to be had. The salmon numbers are beginning to increase now. At Trinity, unfortunately the fall run is a few weeks out, and much to my chagrin, the spring run has already ended.
Delta Fishing -
At Frank's Tract, you will find that the water is clear and as a result, the fish have been spooky. Fishing is continually slow this week, though in the evening there is some top water action for stripers. At Rio Vista, the stripers have come back in, especially along Decker Island, the Power Lines and Sherman Island. When the wind does allow for it, trolling has been decent. Most of the catches have fallen between 4 lbs and 6 lbs. The best bite at the Tracy has been catfish, especially among boaters. Boaters throwing out buzz baits are getting bass as well, and the few stripers that are around fall between 18 inches and 22 inches.
Saltwater Fishing -
In Berkeley and Emeryville, the potluck boats are bringing up one to two halibut for each rod, but stripers have been rare. The rock cod boats are getting ling limits. At Pillar point, near limits of ling, halibut and cabezone are being reached, and albacore fishing is starting to become possible. In the San Francisco By, halibut fishing has been improving to the south, and the occasional striped bass is still around.
At the San Pablo Bay, the halibut fishing is picking up as tides improve, and live bait drifting in Paradise and Angel Island are spots worth checking out. Finally, at the Suisun Bay, the striped bass are finally returning to the delta from out in the bay, and sturgeon is also being caught in decent numbers, primarily from the second ship row and the Martinez pier.
