Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

The general consensus is that crabbing is still going much better than anyone expected, but that it's still not nearly as good as it could be.

In Berkeley/Emeryville, people are still pulling in their limit of crab, and weekday trips into the Bay are just for crab, while weekends do have some fishing stops. Last weekend's fishing was poor, with no halibut caught at all. At Pacifica, the surf has calmed even more so that crabbing's going well. Unfortunately, most of the crabs pulled out here are female so everyone would do well to throw them back.

Mission Rock in San Francisco Bay has seen good perch catches this week, and a few sturgeon have been caught near Candlestick and on the Alameda side. The hot spot at Suisun Bay right now is near the Middle Grounds for sturgeon, and near the Mothball Fleet and Ozol for stripers. Grass shrimp has shown good results for sturgeon, which are starting to come out in bigger numbers than the striped bass.

Slow tides are still making fishing at San Pablo Bay a slow, unsuccessful prospect. In the lower Bay, however, some are catching striped bass and sturgeon with shrimp baits and shiners, with a few bullhead also working well.

At Frank's Tract, Lunker Plunkers are still working well, along with small baits like swimbaits. Black bass fishing still isn't very good, and even the striped bass seem to have spread out and made themselves hard to find. The fish that are being pulled out are fairly large, so it might be the worth the wait to find a good spot.

Black bass fishing is really gearing up at Tracy, where a 6-pound largemouth was pulled out this week. But striped bass are still hard to find, and when they're found they're very small and often too small to keep.

Rio Vista's tides have improved a little. The water temps are cold, in the 40s, but after morning and into the afternoon it's been hitting the mid-50's. Live bait gives you the best bet for striped bass, with it pulling in some over 20 pounds. But fishing is slow, so you might have to wait a long time for that big striper. The Powerlines and Cache Slough are good spots this week for sturgeon.

Trout

Four-pound trout at Amador are being pulled out with flies in the top few feet of water. Almost 2 tons of trout are being dumped into Amador every week. Try Kastmasters and Rapalas, too.

Lake Chabot had a 1,000 pound plant last week, and another one almost as large is scheduled for this week. Fishing is getting better, with some hot spots near Alder point, Indian Cove and Coots Landing. If you want to fish on the shore, Power Bait is working well, but for trolling try Kastmasters and Rapalas. Not many bass are biting, but you can take advantage of the trout plants.

Lake Camanche is still a top place to fish for trout. Trollers and dunkers are both getting great fish from this lake. Rapalas are giving anglers their limits between the dam and Hat Island. Those hanging close to both the north shore and the South Shore Pond are doing well with trout, too, especially with Power Bait. And bass are biting, with some of them around the 20 pound mark.

Clear Lake anglers are hitting the north and south ends with crankbaits and live minnows, and pulling out bass up to 6 pounds. Berryessa Lake is still doing well with the bass and trout, though not quite as well as over the last couple of weeks.

At Shasta, high pressure is making fishing slow and scattered. Bass are staying deep, and the trout have moved into the inner parts of the lake, so fishing from the bank is poor. If you fish deep, try around the Dam or Dry Creek for bass. Six and seven-pound trout are coming out of Quarry Lakes, with a 12-pounder coming out this week.

At the Lafayette Reservoir, fish have been spreading out over the last two weeks and they're harder to find with no real hot spots to speak of. Few are pulling in their trout limits, with most only getting one or two, if any. Bass are biting, though not well, with dark worms as their preferred bait.

Del Valle had over 1,000 pounds of trout dropped in this week which should keep the biting strong. Anglers are pulling in their limits, but the fish are only about a pound on average. Power Bait for shore anglers is working well, with some striped bass and catfish also biting.

New Melones Lake is still offering up trout to both trollers and those on the bank. It's been a great spout for trout over the last few weeks at least, and that doesn't look to change. For the best luck and trout averaging about 3 pounds, hang near the coves and creeks. Bass are being caught in the deeper areas, but there aren't any hot spots and only a few are biting.

Los Vaqueros shows trout biting still on the decline despite recent plants, with striped bass being pulled out by those using swimbaits or anchovies. Some salmon are being caught here in increasing numbers.

Salmon

Salmon are coming out of the Eel and Van Duzen now that they're open and moving well, with the best catches still in the lower parts of the rivers. The Smith is still offering up salmon but not in quite the numbers it has been over the past few weeks. Trinity, while having opened a couple of weeks ago after some time with low flow, still isn't a good fishing spot. Try bright lures since the water is clear. Next week could be better for Trinity and local rivers because rain is predicted.

Because the salmon runs are slowing on the rivers that have shown the best results over the last month, the steelhead should be picking up, as a few came out of the Smith, Chetco and various rivers over the last week.
