San Pablo Reservoir

Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville, crabbing has been, by all accounts, pretty terrible, mostly because the crab boats haven't even been able to go out. They've been docked for 5 or 6 days, and unable to even head out because of rough weather. Sturgeon trips are beginning, however. And as soon as the weather calms down, the hope is that the crabbing will pick up again, as many were getting their limits just a couple of weeks ago.

At Pacifica, crabbing is doing much better than before. The water is calmer, and fewer females are being caught. When a catch is mostly female, anglers are urged to release them. Some are fishing for perch, but they're not biting well.

San Pablo Bay has been good for sturgeon over the last week. The Pumphouse and the China Camp are hot spots right now. Sturgeon are biting best with baits like shrimp, but mud and ghost are working well. Suisun Bay is also good for sturgeon right now around Buoys 4 and 6. Grass shrimp is a good bait to try there, as well as eel. Stripers are small and not really biting well enough to bother with right now.

At San Francisco Bay, the bounty of last week thanks to spawning herring is over, and the sturgeon have scattered again.

At Frank's Tract, few bass are biting, but the sturgeon are picking up. Hang near the mouth of the Suisun Bay and the Sacramento River. Rio Vista has suddenly slowed because of the rough weather. Try this weekend when the weather will be warmer and bright. Tracy had a bass tournament for amateur anglers on Sunday. The top fish caught and released was a 9 pound largemouth bass. Fishing for bass at other times hasn't been producing any fish of that size for the most part. Black bass are biting, but they're not biting well. And stripers are scattered and hard to find. When they're found, the sizes range from about 3 to 4 pounds. But finding them is the hard part, and even then anglers aren't having any luck getting them to bite. There are no hot spots to speak of or any special bait that seems to be working best right now.

Trout

Nightcrawlers and power worms are working well at Amador, with the trout seeming to hover in the top 5 feet or so of the lake. Look in the Jackson Creek part of the lake for the best clumps of trout, though they're scattered pretty evenly throughout the lake now. Plastic grubs are working, too. Just go for bait as that's how most are having the best luck.

Lake Chabot had another plant of about 750 pounds, and with about 1,000 pounds going in last week, trout fishing should be better than it is. It's still slow and the water is cloudy so trollers aren't having the best luck. Anglers on the shore are having much better luck with nightcrawlers or Power Bait. A rainbow trout did come out last week that weighed in at 6 pounds, so hit the shore for best results.

Lake Camanche is giving anglers their trout limits in the mornings. Angers are using Rapalas at both the north and south shore ponds. The south short is doing well for those who are using Power Bait and Eggs. Contra Loma is a good place to try right now because 750 pounds went in this week. Anglers are having the best luck around Channel Point.

At Quarry Lakes, trout are still biting pretty well. One 12 pound trout was caught this week, with several over 5 pounds pulled in, too. You can get your limit if you hit a populated spot. Try the Peninsula, where some anglers having been finding them. Berryessa Lake is slow, with few people fishing right now.

At Shasta, grubs and tubs in about 30 feet of water are pulling out 2 to 3 pound bass. Hit the posts where creeks pour in to the lake. Trout fishing is extremely slow, though the shore gives better luck than trolling.

At the Lafayette Reservoir, few people are even out fishing. 1,000 pounds went in last week and another 1,000 should go in next week. So it might be the place to go for quiet fishing time, because suddenly the reservoir is bare.

Del Valle is another lake where the anglers on the shore are doing far better than trollers. Hang around the Marina where a trout weighing in at 8 pounds was caught this week. About 1,000 pounds went in Monday and 1,000 more pounds will go in next week, so trolling should improve.

New Melones Lake is offering up rainbow trout that are small, usually about 2 to 3 pounds. The water is clear about 10 feet down, so use bright-colored and shiny tackle for best results, and fish in the top 20 feet of water.

Los Vaqueros is under low pressure right now, but the more experience anglers are doing well with both trout and salmon. Shore anglers aren't having much luck because fish are scattered.

San Pablo Reservoir closes Saturday until February.

Salmon

The North Coast Rivers are all open and all murky. Don't try the Smith until the weekend, and try the rest next week after they can clear. The Smith's salmon days are over for now but some steelhead are there. The Russian River opened on Sunday with some steelhead available. Try this weekend in the upper on Saturday, and the lower should be ready by Sunday.

The American River is producing steelhead with lures and nightcrawlers. Anglers are having good luck in the Nimbus Basin. Trinity's waters are warmer now and the river's running a bit faster thanks to the rains. Steelhead are appearing in the North Fork when the water's clear, but not too clear. Try this weekend, as all the rivers should be calming down with the sediment starting to settle from the rains.
