Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut
At Berkeley/Emeryville, crabbing's pretty much over, with no trips available now, but they're still taking reservations for sturgeon trips as that's just starting to pick up in the bay. Pacifica's actually showing some improvement in crabbing, but anglers are having a hard time finding and catching perch.
San Pablo Bay had a surge in sturgeon fishing last week, but the tides have been slow so that's dropped off a great deal. The bass have also scattered, and finding them's not easy. Sturgeon are looking to pick up over the weekend and through next week. Suisun Bay, on the other hand, has good sturgeon fishing with bait like ghost and grass shrimp, and all. Stick around Ozol and Buoy 3 and 4 for the best luck.
San Francisco Bay's sturgeon fishing hasn't picked up any over the last week. Once the herring spawn ended, the great sturgeon catching ended and hasn't really shown any signs of improving. Anglers, when they're catching a few, are typically finding them around Candlestick Point.
Frank's Tract has some striped bass just in the outer areas and near the banks, but they're hard to find and when they are found the most anyone gets is just a few. Black bass aren't biting much better, but those using crankbaits with drop-shotting are having the best results. Sturgeon are biting well at Rio Vista but just in certain areas. Hang near the Slough, the Powerlines and Chain Island for the best sturgeon action. Striped bass anglers aren't having much luck at the moment. But stripers a Tracy are biting well enough once they're found, which is a bit of a challenge. Anglers that find the hot spots, which scatter soon afterwards, are pulling out bass of about 5 pounds, usually with plastic worms and fishing well below the surface.
Trout
Nightcrawlers and Power Bait are working well at Amador, with the trout seeming to hover in the top 5 feet or so of the lake. Wooly buggers, needlefish and Roostertail are working well for anglers. Bass are hanging in the deeper water, generally around the points in about 20-30 feet of water.
Lake Chabot is still benefiting from recent plants, and right now's the best time to fish this lake as they're offering half-price mid-week boat rentals. You pay only half if you rent a boat Mon - Thurs. Rent that boat and head out into the area from Bass Cove right up to Raccoon Point. Use some Power Bait, which is working the best right now, and that half-price boat rental will take you on a trip worth much, much more.
Lake Camanche is good for trollers right now, still in the earlier hours of the day. Needlefish are working well for trout, as are rapalas and triple teasers. Trollers should spend some time in the South Short Pound looking for trout. Bass seekers need to fish between 10 and 20 feet down for the best luck, with things like senkos and crankbait. The schools aren't easy to find, but they're pretty easy pickings with this bait once you do.
Quarry lakes had 1,750 pounds of trout dropping in this week with 1,000 going in on Monday and 750 the following day, on Tuesday. Some anglers are catching their limits in the 5 to 7 pound trout. Right now, the hotspot is at fisherman's row, and the Peninsula shoreline.
Bass are biting for those using dart-hear worms at Shasta. Fish down to about 35 or 40 feet in depth, and avoid the very surface for bass. Pull up a little higher for the few trout that are biting at about 15 feet down. Most people are fishing bass, so trout fishing's pretty non-competitive right now. Try Humdingers or Cripl-lures to take advantage of fewer anglers looking for trout.
At the Lafayette Reservoir, another plant of 1,000 pounds of trout went a few days ago. Ironically, fishing over the weekend was much better than after Tuesday's plant, after which things down considerably.
Del Valle just had over 2,000 pounds of trout dropped in this week, from Oregon and Mt. Lassen, so fishing will be looking up. Anglers are pulling 8 pound trout out, and some are getting their limits. Hang near the marina and the dam, whether others are having their best luck.
Trout anglers are pulling in their limits at Contra Loma, especially when they're out there in the morning. Usually the biting drops off just before noon, with bank anglers having especially god luck. This Lake benefited from about 1,000 pounds of plants this week, which is helping those fishing from the bank feel more confident.
Los Vaqueros has been slow for a couple of weeks, and it's not improving. Whether on the bank or trolling, the trout just aren't biting. Using bait is best, but even the prospects with that are poor.
At New Melones lake, 2 to 3 pound rainbow trout are biting like mad. Fishing from the shore with fat nightcrawlers or Power Bait is working best. Put some marshmallow with your nightcrawlers and soak them for the best results. Kastmasters and Rapalas fished in top 20 feet of water are catching trout, too.
Salmon
Now that salmon fishing's done in the Smith, the steelhead are finally biting well. The Mad and Eel Rivers have been suffering from murky and muddy waters, but that's starting to change. The Eel is clearing out and the weather forecast shouldn't muddy it up again. Hang near the South Fork for the best biting. The Mad River's still pretty muddy but anglers are having good luck with steelhead anyway.
The Russian River closed earlier in the week, but the plan was to have it open by the weekend. Fish are full in the northern parts, and once the mouth's reopened the fish should started to populate that area, too. These should be spread as far and north Guerneville by the weekend. Trinity's water levels are dropping, pushing fish into the upper parts of the river. Top anglers are pulling out10 steelhead daily, with a nice mix of older and younger fish.
