Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

A Saturday sturgeon trip at Berkeley/Emeryville with 11 people only produced one 50-pounder. There's at least one trip scheduled for this weekend. Pacifica has had good crabbing since it reopened on Tuesday. It had been closed because of an unpredictable high surf. Crabbers are doing well, but fish aren't biting at all.

For sturgeon at San Francisco Bay, stay around Coyote Point or Dumbarton Bridge. The bite has slowed, but those are still good spots. For perch, Oyster Point Pier seems to be doing the best, and leopard sharks are being caught there, too. Trolling seems to be the best bet in the Bay right now, especially since a halibut came out near the Brisbane Tubes.

The same places as last week are doing well for sturgeon at San Pablo Bay. The Pumphouse, Shellbank and China Camp are steady for sturgeon. Shrimp are working well, but the crabs are still picking the bait. Suisun Bay is a great place for sturgeon fishing right now, and some striped bass are appearing in places like Ozol and Buoy 2, where some sturgeon are biting, along with Seal Island and Buoy 4. '

The black bass bite has finally improved at Frank's Tract. A swimbait pulled a 14-pound, 8-ounce largemouth out here during a tournament over last weekend. Senkos, drop-shots and Rattletraps are also good for bass in the 5+ pound range.

Sturgeon fishing keeps getting better and better at Rio Vista, with a 10-pounder coming out last week in the Bethel Island area. Stick around the Cache Slough and Sandy Beach for good luck, as well. At Tracy, the best in a tournament last weekend was 5 fish bag weighing a total of 14 pounds, with one of them weighing in at 6 pounds. Bass biting has slowed down considerably.

Trout

Bass that weighed over 7 pounds came out of Amador last week. The Lake has light pressure right now, though a plant of over 4000 pounds went into the lake on Monday. The water's pretty clear right now, and trout are there for the taking.

The main part of Lake Camanche is full of trout and good for fishing right now, especially for anglers using Rapalas. Five to eight pound rainbow trout are biting particularly well for them. Also try the South Shore Pond. If you're looking for bass, stick to 6 to 8 feet depths with plastic and jigs.

The east shore trail at Lake Chabot is good for trout, and so is Half Moon Bay. Trollers are doing a bit better than shore anglers, but no one's doing very well if they're looking for bass as they're scattered and not biting well. Clear Lake does have some bass, but finding them can take some time. Anglers moving slowly and using live minnows as bait are having the best luck. Hot spots are the north end in depths no deeper than 10 to 15 feet, and the south end down to 20 feet. Try a drop shot set up with plastic worms.

Trout fishing at Del Valle is still going full steam ahead, after a 750 pound plant on Monday. At least one 9-pound trout came out of the lake's south end. The angler caught 2 other fish giving his 3-fish total a 19-pound weight, using chartreuse Power Bait with shad-scent. Also, pink and green Power Bait and Power Eggs are working well. At Contra Loma, nightcrawlers and Power Bait are the bait of choice and most are getting at least a trout or two each trip. There hasn't been a plant since the 4th of February, but there will be one this week that should improve the bite.

If you're an experienced trout angler with a good feel for the Lafayette Reservoir, you might get a few. And it's possible that less experienced anglers might just get lucky. But trout are hard to come by here except by those who know the lake well. Bass are biting a bit better, especially for those using nightcrawlers and Power Bait. The water's muddy right now and when it clears the trout bite should improve.

A plant went in at Los Vaqueros on Friday, so the fish were biting well over last weekend, particularly in the South Cove. Another plant goes in this week, so weekend fishing might be just as good. No stripers have been caught in the last week, but some are catching bass near the rock wall.

A week after the record was set for the biggest spotted bass caught at New Melones, weight in at 7.97 pounds, bass fishing is still your best bet here. It's harder to not catch bass than to catch them in this lake right now. Trout is a challenge, however. Stick to trolling near the mouths of the connecting creeks for the best luck with trout, but don't be surprised if you come away disappointed.

At Pardee, shore anglers and trollers are doing well with trout, particularly in depths of 10 to 15 feet. The water's clear and cool. At Shadow Cliffs, a weekly plant of trout is still going in, and two are scheduled for this week. A trout weighing over 14 pounds came out last week, and many were caught in the 5 to 10 pound range. The San Pablo Reservoir opens Friday, February 19th after a 2,400 pound plant. Trout are expected to be biting well.

At Trinity/Lewiston, bass fishing season is just starting. There's nothing to be excited about yet, but they are biting better in the evenings as the water warms. Lake Shasta has bass biting in depths up to 35 feet, but no big concentrations seem to be there. Digger Bay and Sugar Point seem to be the best spots for trollers using swimbaits. Not many trout are biting at Quarry Lakes, but the ones that are biting are decent size, like the 8-pound trout caught this week. Most are around 5 pounds, and are being caught near the Peninsula and Fishermans' row. Trolling is better than shore angling.

Steelhead

The North Coast Rivers are offering up lots of steelhead right now. The Van Duzen, Mad and Eel are all open, with the Eel River being the best of the three, with the Mad right behind. The Smith is very clear so anglers need to use a light line right now.  Trinity has light pressure with fair fishing. And the Russian River is green and going down, with the lower runs expected to be fishable by the weekend.
