Sturgeon, Black Bass, Crab and Halibut
Frank's Tract has clear water but poor fishing. Rio Vista is offering up some striped bass for trollers, but most of them are pretty small with only a few over 6 pounds and none more than 10. Sturgeon are biting fairly well. Stay around that Powerlines and Collinsville.
At Tracy, Black bass were biting very well before the rain but there has been light pressure since then. Walnut Grove offered up a 20 pound striped bass this week for someone fishing off the dock at Snug Harbor. The bass are biting pretty well but the Sturgeon are scattered and not biting.
At Pacifica, look for slow crabbing, an empty pier and a choppy surf. San Pablo Bay has brown water and great sturgeon conditions. Bass are also starting to pop up here and there. Suisun Bay has some sturgeon hot spots for you to try using eel and grass shrimp. The Glomar, Ozol and Ryer Island are good hotspots, especially the Glomar. Two striped bass were caught there this week weighing in at 42 pounds. They were caught with bullheads.
At San Francisco Bay, poor weather is keeping anglers away but a break in the weather should make for better conditions. South Bay is muddy.
Trout
At Lake Amador, trollers aren't having very good luck but shore anglers are catching quite a few trout. Most trout that are coming out of the lake right now are somewhere between 5 and 10 pounds with very few of them caught by those out in the center of the lake. Bass are hovering around 20 to 30 feet down with hot spots near Jackson Creek and the dam.
Trout are biting well at Lake Camanche, particularly for those using Rapalas and trolling rather than those on shore. An 8 pound rainbow trout was caught this week but most didn't come anywhere near that weight. If you're looking for bass try down to 30 feet but some are even hovering closer to the surface within five or 10 feet. There are no real hot spots to speak of this week.
Lake Chabot offered up a catfish that weighed 9 pounds and a rainbow trout that weighed 7 pounds, both caught on Monday of this week. Raccoon point is a good place for trout right now. The big cat was caught near the island but there are no other hot spots as fish seem to be scattered in the murky water. A plant goes in this week weighing in at 500 pounds.
At Davis, it snowed on Monday but everything is still accessible. The ice is generally from about 10 to 14 inches thick and people are catching their limits. Power Bait and night crawlers on a jig are working well right now. Head out early in the morning before 9 AM for best results.
At Contra Loma, trout weighing between seven and 8 pounds have been coming out this week but the big catch of the month was a Valentine's Day bass that weighed 13 pounds. The level is low but it's fairly clear. Those on the east shore having the best fishing.
Trout are biting well at the Lafayette reservoir but a rainbow Bass of 11 pounds came out this week. Use jigs for bass especially in the shallow areas, and use night crawlers or Power Bait for the best luck. At Los Vaqueros trout are biting fairly well. You can have better luck if you stay near the Rock Wall and Peninsula Cove. Bass biting is slow.
At New Melones, shore anglers are having better luck with trout. Bass fishing has slowed but it's still fairly good it's just not excellent like it had been before. Use a slow pace if you're looking for spotted bass. At Pardee, rainbows and browns are hovering near the surface and biting in the Columbia Gulch area. Shore anglers are having poor luck.
The San Pablo Reservoir got its first plant of the year weighing in at 2400 pounds. Fishing hasn't been very good with only two trout weighing 5 pounds each coming out opening day with a 9 pounder being caught this week. The murky water isn't helping. Spotted bass are biting fairly well for drop-shotters and plastic worms. A spotted bass that weighed almost 6 pounds was caught last weekend.
Shasta has bass biting down to 30 feet and anglers having good luck with swim baits, Senkos and worms. Trout are hovering around 3 feet below. At Quarry Lakes fishing is fair if a bit scattered. Two 8 pound fish came out this week. For best luck use Power Bait and stay around Fishermen's Row and the Peninsula.
Steelhead and River Conditions
The North Coast Rivers are a mixed bag for anglers right now. The Eel and the Van Duzen are no good right now and a waste of time for most anglers. The Mad River is very muddy right now but steelhead are there and they're decent size, looking to be generally up to 10 pounds. The two rivers that are giving anglers the best luck right now are the Chetco and the Smith. The Smith is providing good biting right now, if not quite as good as the salmon were biting during that season. If you're looking for Sturgeon you can't go wrong on the Smith, but you'll do even better on the Chetco, which is producing more than any of the other rivers.
Pressure is light at Klamath, but steelhead have been biting especially for fly anglers. The Russian got so much rain on Tuesday that the river was blown out. More rain is predicted so it's not likely the river will be fishable for at least another week. Before the rains steelhead had been biting fairly well and that's expected to come back possibly even better after the storms. At Trinity, Junction City was a good hotspot before the rain early in the week but then the water got thick and muddy and fish stopped biting. Try this for the weekend once the weather clears up.
