Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut
A whopping 80-pound sturgeon came out of Berkeley/Emeryville on the last sturgeon run. More trips are planned for the weekend. Other catches on Sunday include bat rays and leopard sharks. Eight lucky fisherman had success on that run. You should call now to book a trip if you want to snag sturgeon in this area. It looks like the recent rains did result in a good sturgeon bite as was predicted.
Pier crabbers at Pacifica caught their limits over the last week, but Wednesday's rough water slowed that down. If you're looking for Perch, try worms near Rockaway Beach. Good-sized sturgeon are coming out of San Francisco Bay. The best seem to be hovering near the airport and Dumbarton Bridge. San Pablo Bay is also doing well for sturgeon. The tides are improving, so weekend fishing should be even better than this past week. Lots of sturgeon are being caught near the Pumphouse right now.
At Suisun Bay, a 150-pound sturgeon was caught near the Ozol on Monday. Grass eel pulled it in from about 50-foot deep waters. The whole Bay is good for sturgeon right now, but Ozol is particularly productive. Buoy 2 and Seal Island are also good spots for sturgeon right now. Striped bass are biting too, but almost everyone there is out for sturgeon.
At Rio Vista, there's still a lot of debris in the water, especially in the sloughs so you should troll with extreme caution. All the mud and dirt have suppressed the sturgeon fishing and it hasn't improved much since the storms. Once everything settles and washes out the bite should improve overall. Until then, stick to Chain Island and the Power Lines, but don't expect miracles. Cache Slough has had only fair biting, so you might avoid it until the debris clears.
The water's warming up at Frank's Track, so black bass are starting to bite. Some bass up to 9 pounds are coming out, but most are around 2 to 3 pounds. Try Senkos and crankbaits. Tracy is cold and muddy, so nothing's biting right now. Walnut Grove has had light pressure, but sturgeon are biting well. Try the docks for good-sized sturgeon. Ghost or grass shrimp are working the best.
Trout
Amador has gone up another 6 feet to make the total 18 feet over the course of the last month. The trout plants have gone in weekly all along, generally at about 3,000 pounds each, so trout are biting despite the still murky water. The sediment's starting to finally settle, though. Nightcrawlers have been working well, but some are also having luck with Kastmasters.
Lake Camanche is still offering up trout for trollers that stick in the Hat Island area and around the Narrows. Rapalas seem to be the best bait for now. When there aren't storms, the South Shore Pond is good for shore fishermen for trout. Bass biting had been terrible but it's starting to improve now for anglers using jigs. Stick in water of about 50 feet or less for spotted bass.
Lake Chabot had a good weekend, but the beginning of the week slowed down. The Lake had 2 trout plants this weekend, though, so the bite should start to improve again over the weekend. Anglers are having good luck around Raccoon Point, though a trout that weighed almost 10 pounds was caught by the first dock this week.
Nightcrawlers and Power Bait are working best for anglers at Davis, though the fishing has slowed considerably over a few weeks ago. It's still pretty good, especially around Mallard Cove and the east road. The ice is up to 10 inches thick in some areas.
Del Valle is a hot spot for trout right now, especially for those fishing from shore. The murkiness is leaving the water as the sediment from the storms starts to settle and the trout are coming up higher in the water. Try East Beach for trout with either spinners or bait. Catfish are also biting pretty well in the south lake with bait like chicken livers.
Los Vaqueros is inconsistent right now. Trout are biting okay most days, but the bite picks up right after a trout plant. The rock wall has been a good spot for a little while, and seems to still be one of the better areas. Try nightcrawlers. At the Lafayette Reservoir, trout are biting and being caught mostly with Power Bait and nightcrawlers. Another thousand pounds will go in next week.
Pardee Lake opens on Friday, with Rainbow Point and the Launch Ramp expected to be great spots for shore anglers. The Narrows and the mouth of the river are the places to go trolling. Also try near Blue Heron and behind the boathouse along the shore. The San Pablo Reservoir is about to reopen, too. February 19th is the reopening date for the reservoir, with a trout plant of 2,400 pounds going in just before. Fishing is expected to be good.
Trout fishing at New Melones is improving again, with hot spots near the Tuttletown Ramp and Mormon and Carson Cove for trollers. Spotted bass are biting, too. At Shadow Cliffs, a trout plant or two goes in each week, with a few trout of 10 pounds being pulled out. Power Bait from the shore is working well, especially in the dock area. Trollers are catching at about the same rate as shore anglers.
A 1,000 pound trout plant went in to Quarry Lakes on Tuesday. Fish are biting near the Peninsula and Fishermen's Row. Trout up to 8 pounds are coming out every day, with a few catfish also biting in the same areas. At Shasta Lake, more bass are biting than trout, but both are being caught. Trout are hovering in the top 8 to 10 feet of water, especially near the dam. Spotted bass are responding well to swimbaits and Senkos.
Steelhead
The Mad River is still muddy, though it's started to settle a little. Fishing hasn't been very good because of it, but should improve steadily as the dirt settles. The Smith's steelhead season is starting to look a lot like the Smith's salmon season, with good takes in the upper and lower area. The Eel is open with most fish caught in area from Myers Flat to Garvervile, but the main part of the river isn't fishable right now. The Van Duzen is also a no-go. But the Chetco is open again and fish are biting very well.
The Russian River is a mixed bag, with areas that aren't fishable around Guerneville and Healdsburg. The Cloverdale area is open though not producing very well. Healdsburg may be open this weekend. Guerneville is a guess and will depend on whether or not more rain shows up. Trinity is showing good steelhead biting, mostly downstream from Douglas City.
