This week in the lakes there is a slowing in bass fishing, but still plenty of catfish and Kokanee to be had, as well as crappie. Bass and catfish are more plentiful in the delta areas. As far as saltwater fishing goes, you're likely to find plenty of stripers, Halibut, rays, sharks, cod, lings and the occasional albacore depending on where you head out.
Lake Fishing
Berryessa is offering productive Kokanee fishing, especially between 30 feet and 65 feet near the narrows and the island. Both catfish and bass fishing have been slow here this week. Camanche is offering a steady catfish bite along the main lake, and those who go out trolling are getting trout, especially in the earliest hours of the morning. If you are looking for bass here, check the deep water and use drop offs for the best result.
In Chabot, you can fish for catfish using either chicken liver or mackerel. The later in the day that you fish, the better off you will be. In the Clear Lake, the hot weather and the presence of heavy algae are making bass fishing considerably more difficult than normal. The algae problem does not appear to be as bad in the lake's northern end. Try drop shotting or jigs, but go very slowly. Contra Loma is offering plenty of crappie and catfish, which make up a good portion of the catch this week. The spot to be for both is Channel Point.
Trolling at Davis has been producing limits and if you are looking for productive fishing you may want to consider drying shore fishing and fly fishing has both have been productive. The water temperature is running at around 73F, and the fishing pressure has been relatively light. More of the rainbows that are being landed are at between 11 inches and 13 inches. Fish as large as 20 inches are also being caught. The key to the trolling here is to use 2.5 to 3 colors worth of lead core line or to set the down rigger down to a depth of between 12 feet and 16 feet.
The area worth trolling begins at the Honker boat ramp and runs north toward the island. Honker Cove's southern point has been producing for the shore fishermen that come to fish early and use Kastmaster lures along with powerbait. There are only a very small number of fly fishermen fishing on the lake, but fishing is being reported as being good for some. Using dual small bead head nymphs below an indicator with an indicator depth of 4 to 5 feet has been ideal, and the take has been subtle.
In Del Valle, the striped bass are coming in between 3 lbs and 5 lbs, especially around the dam. The trout fishing has been relatively hit or miss as of late. The catfish bite is still relatively strong, especially around the dam. The catfish bite around the south end of Lafayette has been making up most of the action in this area. Your best bets on bait are night crawlers and chicken livers. During this last week, 1,500 lbs worth of catfish went in.
There is a good morning trout bite in Los Vaqueros in the South Cove, as well as from the shore that is north of the rock wall. The fishing isn't great here, but it may be the best option if you are looking for trout. There is also a great amount of scarcity in terms of catfish, stripers and bass. New Melones is offering Kokanee fishing but it is getting more difficult, but you still may be able to get limits if you make it out by daybreak. Night fighting for cats has been good, but fishing for bass has been tough.
The San Pablo Reservoir recently received a 2,400 lb catfish plant this past Wednesday. The best spot for fishing here is going to be Scow Canyon. Bass fishing is certainly possible, but fair. Quarry Lakes has been productive, especially after three sizable trout were pulled out of the water by Alex Carrillo, hailing from Union City. This was the week's best catch, highlighted by a 5lb trout. Fishing for both catfish and trout has been fair rather than hot.
Delta Fishing
Frank's tract has been relatively productive as of late. The best bet is going to be drop shotting if you are looking for bass, especially at 10 feet to 20 feet in the water. You should be using a relatively heavy weight so that you can push through all of the grass. Most of the Rio Vista catch is small stripers and shakers. There are also plenty of catfish for you to catch here. When you travel to the San Joaquin side, you will find larger stripers but the numbers are miniscule. Tracy has been offering fair fishing, outside of the occasional catfish coming out at the hands of anglers on the shore. There are also panfish here, and occasional striped bass and black bass as well.
Saltwater Fishing
Berkeley and Emeryville are offering decent fish. The potluck boats are getting more than a halibut and striper with each angler. The Island boats are getting limits of lings and cod. Albacore fishing has not been great as of late, however. Fishing has also slowed at Pacifica, especially with the striped bass bite along and around the beaches. You may be able to find a few small sardines, but this is most of the pier catch.
At Pillar Point, many local trips to the Pescadero have regularly returned with limits of rock cod and lings. On Saturday, 16 lings were caught by 18 people by the Riptide, and limits were achieved for assorted types of rock cod as well. In the San Francisco Bay, rays and sharks have been plentiful, especially from the Oyster Point Pier. Additionally, there are plenty of Halibut to be had as well, especially along Candlestick, Swirl and Brisbane.
In the San Pablo Bay you will find good striped bass and Halibut fishing. The best places to find fish being given up is the Alcatraz area and the Sisters to Angel Island. You'll tend to find more halibut out there than bass. At Suisun Bay, the striped bass are turning albeit in small numbers, but it is definitely a start. Fishing for sturgeon is still quite steady, especially at Mothball Fleet and Glomar.
