Lake fishing prospects have been good this week. In the Camanche, prospects for bass, crappie and catfish have all been good, and if you can get to the deep water you will also find plenty of trout as well. The bass are spending a fair amount of time along the south shore near the cliffs as well as in the narrows. The catfish and crappie on the other hand are especially plentiful along the harbor at the south shore. Trout fishing is slowing down somewhat at Chabot, but you will find plenty of catfish here, especially if you visit in the evening hours.
At Clear Lake you will find bass biting in the middle of the lake, as this is where the fewest number of weeds are currently growing. Pressure has been relatively light at Contra Loma, but fishermen are still pulling out bluegill, catfish and crappie, especially at the fishing dock you'll find at Channel Point as well as near the swimming area. Lafayette's trout bite is especially advantageous in the early morning hours, especially for anglers using the docks on the east shore. The catfish bite continues well into the day, with catfish as large as 20 lbs coming up earlier this last week.
If you are looking for good striped bass fishing, check out Del Valle, where you will find them in the just legal range. There are plentiful numbers of catfish to be found and fished along the south end of the lake, and trout fishing is still especially good if you set off near the dam. On the other end of the spectrum, fishing has been so-so at Los Vaqueros because the conditions have been warm and windy. Trollers have been struggling to find trout, which only seem to surface around the rock wall and South Cove. Prospects for stripers as well as catfish are both good.
For regular bass, catfish and Kokanee biting, check out New Melones. Kokanee can be found in the deeper waters of the main lake. Bass, on the other hand can be found taking top water lures especially during dawn as well as dusk. Catfish can be found around the rockier points. Bait anglers are doing well catching trout at the San Pablo Reservoir. Bass fishing here is also worthwhile, but the bite for catfish has been relatively slow.
The Shadow Cliffs Lake is currently getting plants of 500 lbs worth of catfish every week. You will also find some decent leftovers in the way of bass fishing and trout fishing as well. Fishing has been relatively slow at Quarry Lakes, but the warmer weather and an increase in the stock of catfish have both improved the bite. In celebration of July 4, someone caught a stunning 15 lb catfish.
River fishing has been relatively hit or miss, especially in the American where Folsom's increased water releases have scattered the bass and the shad somewhat. The Feather is experiencing high water and this may have completely ended this year's shad season. You will find some Steelhead here, spreading around below the after bay, but the numbers are not great. The tail end of the salmon run is finally moving through the lower end of the Klamath river.
The best bite at the McCloud river is taking place between the hours of 4 o'clock pm and dusk. Shad fishing is especially good in the lower Sacramento river, especially below the Diversion Dam at Red Bluff.
Hot water has put somewhat of a damper on the trout bite, especially along the Redding area. River flows are stabilizing at Trinity, and now the salmon are beginning to come in. It certainly isn't limit fishing, but it is definitely a solid start to the season. Trout fishing has been especially good at Truckee, as a result of late afternoon hatches and evening hatches, so check out Truckee if you are looking for a good trout bite.
The three places to visit in the Delta are Frank's Tract, Tracy and Rio Vista. Things are relatively slow in Frank's Tract this week, so you will find few anglers mulling about and even fewer fish. In Rio Vista, most of the catch is being made up of small stripers unless you are specifically trying to get catfish because there are plenty of catfish to pull up. You may also find smallmouth bass, which are hanging out in the sloughs in the rockier areas. Finally, the game at Tracy is the catfish but you also find a relatively fair bass bite and quite a few stripers as well, which are appearing to trickle in from Grant Line.
The fishing in the saltwater areas has also been good this week. The Happy Hooker in Berkeley and Emeryville managed to enjoy some good fishing days between Friday and Monday, and they continue to have hot fishing all the way through Wednesday. The four different weekend trips that they took managed to result in a total of 183 stripers as well as 63 halibut. Another 30 bass were in the boat come Wednesday. The bass can be found over every single rocky structure along the main bay.
Rock finishing is reaching limits easily at Pillar Point, and there are plenty of blacks, browns and vermilions to choose from. Boats are doing especially well when traveling south below Martin's Beach and Half Moon Bay. Albacore are finally beginning to show approximately 25 miles away from shore. The current weather is likely going to keep the boats away for a couple of days, but there are bound to be plenty of albacore upon their return.
The San Francisco Bay is currently experiencing wind that is keeping most boats out of the water, especially along the south bay. The best way to get halibut and stripers has been to get out early in the morning. Shore anglers have had some luck with stripers along Candlestick, Seal Point Pier and Brisbane Tubes as well. Halibut fishing is especially outstanding when you visit Paradise and Southampton at San Pablo Bay.
Suisun Bay is offering worthwhile sturgeon fishing, especially around the Mothball fleet and with shrimp baits. The striped bass are particularly excellent in Pacifica and when fishing with meal jigs, small poppers and wood plugs.
