Fishing Report for June 13th, 2009

goldengateThe fishing was so insane this past week that it is hard to know exactly where to begin. The mid bay, for example, went fairly insane over the span of this past weekend. The average Pacific Halibut that were caught in Eureka and by Shelter Cove were better than 40lbs. The ocean took a warm turn over the past week, just in time for the rockfish opener in local waters. You are going to find fishermen along municipal and county piers and plenty of striped bass to be had along the beaches. Fishermen are wheeling plenty of live bait in their coolers and they seem to be doing just fine at catching their fish.

There was a fine Halibut catch last week on Wednesday, and it bought up some fine bass as well which was just icing on the cake. On Thursday, bass were found stacked all over the rocks near Alcatraz and the Birdman's island as well as down along Mel's Reef. The scores jumped to 41 bass from just a handful by the weekend, and 30 halibut were also caught. Sunday, the crew had 18 bass limits and 15 halibut limits, and most of the stripers found were between 5 lbs and 8 lbs. A beautiful 29 pound striper was also caught.

This week you will find plenty of boats decorating Mel's Reef and Alcatraz. The bite is happening at either tide as long as the water is in the process of moving, and there always seem to be party boats along the rocks where the bite appears to be the best. The Cal Dawn managed a 16 halibut and 66 bass catch on Monday, 16 limits early on Wednesday and then a dozen halibut up to 18lbs. The New Huck Finn was also successful with 20 limits of bass and 14 halibut up to 20lbs, then 25 bass limits on Wednesday with 10 halibut up to 17lbs.

On Saturday, the rock fishing season is going to be opening up above Pigeon Point. There are plenty of anchovy as far off as Farralon Islands. The warm waters are triggering a more robust appetite on the behalf of the cod. Unfortunately, it means tons of sardines but very few anchovy. The local guys in the party boats have noticed the warming of the water, and yet they are all sticking around to the bay this weekend because the bass fishing is good and they do not want to give up on a good thing.

Some of the live sardine fish that were caught over the span of the last week were the size of Sierra trout. This is fine news considering the upcoming rock fishing opening. Starting in and around the bay there have been some truly nice catches of Halibut, especially when fishing from the pier at the Paradise Beach Park which means that you can fish even if you do not have a boat. You will also find plenty of halibut around the East Bay and the Berkeley Pier. You can also buy anchovy at the Berkeley Marina, hauling them to the planks to fish with.

Shelter Cove helped some lucky fishermen land 25 Pacific halibut with the average fish weighing around 46lbs. The biggest Pacific halibut in the bunch was a shocking 87 lbs. All of the fish were found between 200 and 240 feet down using single sardines and mackerel as bait.

This week is going to be great for fishing. Here are some of your options:

If you're looking for lake fishing, there are plenty of options. Trolling around for trout in Amador lake has been productive, especially when using needlefish about 20 feet down. Bass fishing continues to be very good here, in the rocky areas of the Camanche, Del Valle if you are looking for striped bass and also Lafayette.

Catfish are biting in the south and north areas of the Camanche as well as the Camanche arm, Causeway Cove and in the areas of the upper river. Contra Loma is about to experience a 750 lb catfish plant which is designed to augment the 500 lbs of catfish planted last week. The most productive areas for catfish are the water along the swimming lagoon as well as Channel Point. The best place to fish for catfish right now in Del Valle is along the Marina.

Trout fishing is very good between Raccoon Point and Bass Cove in Chabot. You will do especially well with Powerbait and a sliding sinker rig. Del Valle is showing to be productive in terms of trout fishing as well as active cat fish and striped bass.

Lafayette is the place to go for blue gill along with scattering catfish, bass and blue gill. Lafayette will be a good place to check out trout and catfish, as 1,250 catfish went in on Tuesday, and 1,000 lbs of trout is planned to go in later this week.

As far as river fishing goes, you can expect to find shad along the American, and plenty of fishing to be had along McCloud despite how high the waters are. Large rainbow trout are surfacing along the canyon here. Shad are definitely in the system at the Russian, but fishing has still been relatively slow for some reason. Sacramento is experiencing plenty of shad up to Red Bluff as well as a dry fly hatch for trout.

If saltwater is more your thing, you will find bass and halibut, stripers and good live bait in Berkeley and Emeryville. Pillar Point is offering halibut and rock cod, blacks, gopher and Vermillion as well. Halibut fishing is picking up in the San Francisco bay. Fishing is rounding back into shape in the San Pablo Bay where the best way to go is with live bait drifting. Sturgeon fishing is absolutely worthwhile in the Suisun Bay, as are striped bass.

Now get out there and start fishing, as there are plenty of fish to be had!
