Fishing Report: January 08, 2010

Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville, sturgeon trips are ready to go now as long as enough people are ready. The sturgeon catch is still improving. San Pablo Bay is still giving anglers some sturgeon near China Camp but overall the fishing has been slow. The bass are scattered and hard to find, and not biting well at all.

Sturgeon fishing is best right now at Genentech Point and Oyster Point at San Francisco Bay. Some anglers are pulling sturgeon out also near the A-Frame and the Dumbarton Bridge. For the south part of the Bay, stick to ghost shrimp. For northern areas, a combination of ghost shrimp and herring are giving anglers good results.

At Pacifica, if you're looking for perch stay near the golf course and Hidden Beach. The Pier is a good spot for crabbing, with up to six crabs per trip coming back. Stick with eel and grass shrimp at least another week at Suisun Bay. There are no hot spots, but sturgeon are biting almost everywhere in the Bay right now. Pressure has been light at Tracy given the dense morning fog and cold conditions.

Frank's Tract is producing mostly very small striped bass, but they're biting very well. Few black bass are being pulled out here right now.  Black bass fishing here has been poor for at least a few weeks, and that's likely to continue. At Rio Vista, a 30-pound striped bass was pulled out near Decker Island, marking an impressive catch for an otherwise slow week. A few sturgeon are biting near the Powerlines, and they're still hovering around the Cache Slough.

Trout

Another plant of 3,000 pounds went in at Lake Amador this week, as has happened once a week for the last several weeks. Fly fishers are having the best luck with float tubes and woolly buggers. Trout are hovering in the top few feet of water right now. Berryessa's still not seeing many anglers out, but the water's clear and there are trout in the lake.

Clear Lake is cold right now so that bass aren't biting well, except for those anglers who find a concentration of them and use live minnows as bait. Trollers aren't doing well, but people on shore, especially near Nice, are catching a few nice bass. Don't fish areas deeper than 25 feet for the best results.

At Lake Chabot, Raccoon Point and Half Moon Bay are hot spots where anglers have been catching their limits. Stick to the shore for the best luck, but bear in mind that trollers are starting to do better so that could really improve over the next few weeks. Trout of 8 pounds have been pulled out over the last week by shore anglers.

Lake Camanche has been equally good for both trollers and shore anglers lately, but the favor right now seems to be going to trollers. Two to five pound rainbow trout are being pulled out of the main part of the lake. The South Shore Pond is a good place to try, as some large concentrations have been found there. Bass are scattered, but when you find them they're biting best in up to 25 feet of water, with jigs and rubber worms.

Shadow Cliffs benefited from 3 plants over Christmas and a plant a week after that, giving anglers good trout bites. Use Power bait around the boat launch, and stick to shore for the best results. At New Melones, anglers are pulling out 3-pound trout near the Tuttletown ramp with Power Bait, Kastmasters and Rapalas. Stick to shallow water, less than 25 feet deep for the best luck here.

Del Valle hasn't been very steady for trout this past week. Near the damn and the Narrows are where anglers are having the best luck, but the bite still isn't consistent. Some trout have been caught near the marina, too. Biting should improve next week, because a 1,000 pound plant will be going in. At Shasta Lake, tubes, grubs and plastics are snagging some bass for trollers down to 60 feet depths. Few fish are hovering near the surface.

Fish in the early morning at the Lafayette Reservoir. Angers are having the best luck in the east and south parts of the lake. Don't expect more than a few good bites, though if you're lucky you might get your limit. Brightly-colored baits are working best, like bright Power Bait, and nightcrawlers are also catching trout. A plant of 1,000 pounds goes in here this week, too.

Trout anglers are still pulling in their limits near the east shore at Contra Loma, especially in the earlier hours for anglers using nightcrawlers as bait. Some are having good luck with Power Bait. Most trout coming out are about 3 pounds each.

Los Vaqueros had a great week but the trout bite is starting to slow. Another 1,200 pounds will go in before the weekend. Try Power Eggs and Power Worms, and fish from the shore, as the biggest concentrations right now are within 15-20 feet of shore. Some anglers are still doing well with bobbers and bait, with a few even getting striped bass or  large mouth bass.

Steelhead

The Mad River isn't very consistent right now, but a lot of steelhead are being pulled out of the Smith, especially below the forks. Other North Coast Rivers like the Eel are struggling but starting to show improvement. Always check for low flow before you plan a trip. The American and Feather Rivers aren't doing much for anglers, with very slow steelhead fishing and not much action at all.

The Russian River is giving up some steelhead near Guerneville still this week, all the way up to Healdsburg, but the river level is starting to drop. A steelhead of 14 pounds was pulled out of the Russian this week, so as long as the river stays open, steelhead fishing should be good. At Trinity, steelhead fishing is probably the best of any of the local rivers. Anywhere between Del Loma to Junction City is a good bet. The pressure is lower in the Douglas City area, but steelhead are still biting there.
