Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville, sturgeon trips are getting ready to go out in full force starting on Saturday, January 2nd, so get your reservations in now. Since the end of crabbing, sturgeon have slowly been improving and the hope is that in the next week the bite will be superb.

San Pablo Bay is offering about fair sturgeon bites. The Pumphouse is still a good place for sturgeon, with Shellbank and China Camp added this week as host spots. The sturgeon are hovering in depths down to 25 feet, so don't go too deep or you'll miss them. Stripes bass aren't being found at all.

Sturgeon fishing has improved in San Francisco Bay, especially near Oyster Point and Oakland Airport. Ghost shrimp are giving anglers in the southern part of the Bay good results. Some anglers are also using herring as they get closer to San Fran and Oakland. Perch are also biting surprisingly well.

At Pacifica, the surf's been high so the pier was closed over the weekend. Sardines and squid are working for crabs right now. At Suisun Bay, eel and grass shrimp are pulling in sturgeon near Ozol, Little Cut and Buoys 6 and 4. For stripers, Antioch is the best spot right now.

Frank's Tract is giving good results to anglers at the end and near the False River with striped bass bites. Many are small, but some are being pulled out that weight about 8 pounds. Anglers looking for black bass aren't having much luck. At Rio Vista, stay around the Cache Slough for sturgeon, as when you find a good spot they bite well. Striped bass are scattered and hard to find. And at Tracy, the Grant Line Canal is a good place for legal-sized stripers, with many varying between 8 and 10 pounds. For catfish, choose anchovies as bait as this seems to be producing the best results.

Trout

Power Eggs, Kastmasters and Rapalas are the bait of choice over the last week at Lake Amador. Thanks to a trout plant of about three-thousand pounds that was dropped in on Tuesday, the fish are biting well. For best results, stay in the top few feet. At Berryessa, very few anglers are even out so if you fish it now you'll have a pretty private and peaceful experience. The water's clear and the trout and salmon are biting at the moment for the few who are out and about.

At Lake Chabot, Power Bait's best right now. Choose chartreuse and soak it for the best biting. Shore anglers are doing better than trollers over the last week. If you find a good trout spot you can do well, but finding them isn't the easiest. Some are pulling catfish out too, with an 11-pounder pulled out this week.

Lake Camanche is a good spot for trout anglers at the moment, both for trollers and those fishing from shore. For now, biting is still best in the early hours then fading off as the day goes on. The South Shore Pond and the main lake are best for trout right now, with plugs working best for trollers and spinners and bait giving shore anglers the best biting. If you're looking for bass, they're at the top of the water, so fish in the upper 20 feet.

At Shasta Lake, Senkos and dart worms are giving anglers the best results near the points. The bass are in the water down to a 40-foot depth. Trout fishing has been slow.

At Quarry lakes, a 500-pound plant went in the week, making the two-week plant total over a ton. Still, fishing hasn't improved very much. But some are coming out well over 5 pounds, so the size is improving if not the bite. The back of the Peninsula is where most anglers are pulling out the larger trout.

Clear Lake has water temperatures hovering in the mid-40s, so the bass are scattered around. Flipping jigs are working well, and live minnows are getting bites, too. Stay on the north end of the lake for best results.

Del Valle is still giving some fish up near the dam, but for the most part trout biting has mostly fallen off. The water is cloudy and dark, so the more reflective and bright your jigs, the better. At Lafayette, anglers are catching trout steadily, but not well. Few are getting their limits, even when they find a spot because the fish are scattering quickly. Stay near the south end and the east cover, and stick with things like needlefish and nightcrawlers for the best results.

Trout anglers are still pulling in their limits at Contra Loma, especially in the earlier hours. The water level is fairly low so shore anglers have some muddy space to deal with if they want to get very close to the water.

Los Vaqueros has been vastly improved by a 1,200 pound plant that went in this week. The biting went from slow to anglers pulling in limits. Stay around the Marina and the South cove. Bass fishing has improved, thanks to the stripers eating the trout plants. Rainbow swimbaits are working well for bass, and even pulled out a 15-pounder this week.

Salmon

The Mad River is running green and full of steelhead, with anglers having the best results using bobbers and bait. The Eel River is murky and muddy, and fishing hasn't been very productive there. And the Smith, after an excellent salmon season is just fair right now, though the water conditions are ideal for sturgeon and steelhead.

The Russian River was closed last week, but the mouth opened on Monday and the river seemed flooded with steelhead. Near Guerneville and Casini's were where the biggest concentrations of fish were found. The water level is still fairly low, but not so low it can't be open, and the water's very clear so using brightly colored jigs is a good idea. Trinity is looking up when it comes to steelhead fishing, with many anglers pulling out their limits. Wild fish and farmed fish are both being pulled out, with most anglers fishing Trinity right now fly fishing with good results.
