Fishing Report: January 29, 2010

Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut

Thanks to recent heavy rains and storms, everything's running full and most everything is muddy. But after almost a full week of no fishing, anglers were able to get back out this week and the results were better than expected in many cases.

At Berkeley/Emeryville there are sturgeon trips planned for this weekend after a few weeks with none going. Some are planned for each day and the hopes are that the recent rains will have them biting well.

At Rio Vista, look for sturgeon from Cache Slough up to Steamboat Slough and try grass shrimp and ghost shrimp, which seem to be producing a lot of catches. Sardines have also been working well. Because of the recent storms if you're not an experienced troller you should wait a little while before heading to Rio Vista, especially in the sloughs, because of the large amount of debris in the water. If you go, take it slow and watch for limbs and large debris.

A black bass tournament at Frank's Tract last Sunday didn't produce much even for the winner with 7 fish weighing in for a total of 23 pounds. For most it was a disappointing day, a few bright spots. The water had a lot of debris in it, but that's starting to flow out and the water is clearing up so fishing should start to improve. Tracy is muddy with slow moving fish thanks to the 50 degree water.

At Suisun Bay, 20 sturgeon fit to keep were caught at The Diamond Classic this week, though most were undersized. Look for fish around Buoy 9, Seal Island, the Mothball Fleet and Seal Island. Anglers seem to be sticking with grass shrimp and eel. A few striped bass have been caught as well as sturgeon.

At San Pablo Bay there was no real fishing until Tuesday when an angler from out of state caught both a 25-pound striper and a sturgeon that measured 56 inches. These were caught near the Pumphouse. Sturgeon fishing conditions are as close to perfect as possible and that's expected to continue for at least a while.

San Francisco Bay had a herring spawn this week and anglers expected the sturgeon to be biting in that area, but were disappointed. The spawn was at Fishermen's Park, so maybe sturgeon will flow in to that area with the tides. Perch are biting at the Oyster Point pier.

Trout

Lakes are full thanks to the rain, and Amador his up 12 feet over the last 2 weeks. Last Friday and this Tuesday a total of 3 tons of trout went in. The water's fairly murky but the top is clear and that's where the trout are hovering.

Lake Camanche had some good trout fishing over the weekend especially for trollers hovering between Little and Big Hat Island. Shore anglers are soaking bait and casting lures near the South Shore Pond with pretty good results. Don't look for bass though, as they're not biting well at all.

Lake Chabot is up 3 feet and is right now about 4 feet below being full. Pressure's been light, but trout of 5 pounds and a little over have been caught this week. About 750 pounds went in the lake on Monday, with more scheduled for next week so the fishing should stay the same or improve.

Del Valle has risen 10 feet and the water is muddy and murky brown. Catfish are biting on the south end but trout fishing is slow right now. They are starting to move a bit near the creek and the dam. This fishing won't improve much until the sediment really starts to drop. It's setting a little now but not enough to clear the water.

At the Lafayette Reservoir, a rainbow trout was caught in a brief lull in the rain on Tuesday that weight in at 8 pounds and 14 ounces. This was pulled out near the South Cove, but that's the only good catch to speak of this week. Most anglers are lucky to get one or two fish. Shore fishing is poor right now, so opt for trolling. The water is full of mud at Contra Loma, like many lakes in the area, but nightcrawlers are catching a few trout, mostly on the east side.

Light lines are working pretty well at Los Vaqueros but the best bet is to stay on the shore. Trollers aren't having much luck. On Tuesday a trout plant went in and the water's surprisingly clear so some trout and stripers are being caught. Try around the South Cove near the wall. At New Melones, some spotted bass are need the wood and brush patches at depths down to about 50 feet. The pressure's been light because of the storms and rains. New Melones went up 3 feet over the last week, with the muddiest waters near the shore. Even in the main part of the lake the water's brown. Once it clears, trout should start to rise to the top.

At Quarry lakes, the water's going up but it's not too muddy. It's cloudy, but fish are biting fairly well. A trout that weighed 8 pounds was caught at Peninsula Point this week, with some anglers pulling a few out of the lake.

Steelhead

The storms didn't do much good for the rivers in the short-term, but once they open up the fishing should be good. The North Coast Rivers are a mess, except the Smith the Mad River. The Smith is probably the best of any of the rivers right now, and the steelhead are moving and biting. Anglers are fishing the Mad River even though it's muddy. Some are getting a few bites, but for the most part the fishing is poor. As it clears, it will improve. The other North Coast Rivers are running too full. Check for flows and openings before you go.

The American River is being fished, though it's not great biting, with the best results around the hatchery and Nimbus Basin. Trinity is clearing out well but the Russian River needs at least another week before it's fishable.
