Fishing Report: July 24th, 2009

lakefishingProspects are good for all fish all around, but knowing where to find the right bite is the best way to get the most out of your fishing endeavor. Here is a look at what's biting, and more importantly, where.

Lake Fishing:

Bass: In the early and late hours you can find a good top water bass bite at Camanche. Plastics have been relatively productive here as well. The bass bite is particularly light at Clear Lake because the water temperatures are climbing to the 80s, but if you're here looking for Bass this week, try drop shotting Senkos or plastics. There is a fair striped bass bite at Del Valle. Trolling around Howden Cove at Los Vaqueros will bring about a decent haul of striped bass. On the other end of the spectrum, bass fishing has slowed at San Pablo and New Melones.

Catfish: In the Camanche you will find good catfish prospects. Catfish prospects are also especially good at the Chabot, especially in the morning and the evening, but the evening bite is definitely the better out of the two options. If you are down by Contra Loma, you will find that the catfish are taking chicken livers and night crawlers, especially around the Channel point dock. The best bite that you are going to find here is occurring in the early half of the morning, with most fish ranging from 1 lb to 2. You will also find catfish at Del Valle as well as Lafayette, one of the two more common targets as of late.

Catfish are not yet very active in the San Pablo Reservoir and it is unknown whether or not they will begin to show themselves soon. There are plenty of catfish to behold at Shadow Cliffs, however, as 500 lb plants are going in every week. Weekly catfish plants are also going in every week at Quarry Lakes with around 500 to 750 lbs going in every week, but the pressure has been light so the catch rates have been relatively low so far.

Trout: The trout bite has bee relatively slow in many places, including Del Valle this week. On the other hand, trout fishing has been fair between the South Cove and the Rock Wall at Los Vaqueros. At the San Pablo Reservoir you will find a few trout, but the bite has slowed significantly in the past week or so.

Panfish: The panfish are coming out in full force, especially at Del Valle and Lafayette where they are becoming some of the more common catches.

Lakes to Avoid this Week: Trinity and Lewiston are suffering from warm weather and low water levels, keeping people away from these lakes for the most part. Trinity has been virtually empty and Lewiston has been relatively quiet.

River Fishing:

Shad: Shad are still being caught in the American, especially in the upper stretches between Sunrise and Nimbus Dam. Flows are currently high and pressure is relatively light, though. There is a late shad bite below the Diversion Dam in Red Bluff. Fishing is relatively good between Anderson and Red Bluff in the Lower Sacramento area.

Salmon: The salmon fishing is fair between Lewiston and Junction City in the Trinity. The fish here are moving relatively quickly, and so the luck has been rather hit or miss but it's not completely out of the question, especially if you call ahead.

Green Drake: You'll find a green drake hatch at the Truckee, but it may be best to use streamers and fish the deeper holes for success here.

Delta Fishing:

Striped Bass: On the San Joaquin side of the Rio Vista there is still striped bass to be found, but shaker bass are much more likely.

Catfish: Catfish are a popular bet on the Rio Vista, and you are also going to find the catfish to be the most common catch when fishing along the Grant Line Canal in the Tracy area. Fishing pressure has been relatively light all over, though.

Saltwater Fishing:

Berkeley and Emeryville: The pot luck boats at Berkeley have been working on the inside end of the bay looking for striped bass and halibut, and landing a halibut and one to two bass with each trip. On Sunday, the New Easy Rider landed a 34 lb halibut. Top producers for Halibut this week have been Red Rock, Southampton and Paradise, and Halibut have reached 25 lbs here easily with bass reaching 10 lbs.

Albacore trips are going out on the Flying Fish on Friday and Sunday. The Happy Hooker is also out there, working along the Marin county coast to reach out to rock cod limits and plenty of ling cod as well. On Monday there is a planned trip to the surf in search of stripers.

Between Ocean Beach and Santa Cruz County: You are going to find plenty of striped bass. You can catch a lot of live bait here in Pacifica and then turn it around and use it for the bass fishing. Offshore winds near Pillar Point have kept the boats away from the Farralons. Local boats are managing to catch decent numbers of blacks as well as blues, especially on trips up toward Pescadero. The winds this week along the San Francisco bay have kept many anglers away from the southern end of the bay, but shore anglers have been coming out and claiming 25 inch stripers.

San Pablo Bay: is offering big tides this week which have cut down on the halibut fishing considerably, but the tides are supposed to be favorable this week which will change the fishing a bit. The top spot this week is Paradise. It would also do you well to check out Suisun Bay if sturgeon is your catch of choice. Most of the sturgeon that is being landed right now is going to be shakers.
