The fish are still biting in the lakes this week. The trout are still biting around 15 feet below the water in Amador, where you will also find Bass about five feet lower. Over this past weekend, someone caught a 14 lb catfish. There seems to be plenty of trout between the Dam and Hat Island in the Camanche, with Bass swimming in the narrows and the main lake. The catfish here are still plentiful, especially along the camping areas in the north shore and south shore. The best times for trout in the Chabot are during the midmorning hours and early evening hours. The Bass are beginning to move into the shallows and they seem to be taking swim baits well. Catfish plants are going into the water every week as well.
The south end in the Clear lake is relatively slow, and you have to stay on the move offering top-water plugs for the best results. There are a lot of weeds here that are keeping fishermen from being successful. On the other hand, trout fishing around Del Valle is especially good at the dam, where bait fishing and trolling are both productive. Catfish can be found along the Marina, and check the Dam and the Heron Bay if you are looking for Stripers.
Trout anglers are walking away with limits at LaFayette every day, especially along the south end of the lake and when power bait is used despite the fact that not many trout have been planted lately, but plenty of catfish plants have been going in. Trout fishing in Los Vacqueros has been relatively uneven, though bank anglers tend to be doing well with the use of yellow Power Bait, especially down along the rock wall. The action experienced by trollers is relatively spotty at best, but they are doing better around 20 feet below surface, where Stripers can also occasionally be found.
If you troll the main lake at New Melones along the spill way and the dam you will find plenty of 14 inch to 16 inch Kokanee. The bite tends to be good all throughout the day, though there is a bit of a lull during the mid day hours. Bass fishing tends to be best around the coves. There are plenty of trout as well as Kokanee in the narrows of Pardee, as well as inside the mouth of the river and along Mel's cove as well. The Kokanee will be hanging out deeper than the trout. Check out the lake's eastern side for catfish.
At the San Pablo Reservoir you will find trout, but trolling is slow. The catfish bite is not yet kicking in yet. Try rainbow power bait especially along Bobber Beach and Farrell's Landing. Catfish are being planted along the Shadow Cliffs, and you will still find a fair number of trout here. Another fair fishing spot is Quarry Lakes where you will find alternating trout plants and catfish plants. This week alone a stock of 500 lbs of catfish went in.
River fishing has been good, especially if you are looking for a strong and solid shad bite, which can be found on the American River, especially during the evening and along the Nimbus Dam and sunrise. Shad fishing is also good at Thermalito in the Feather River, especially along the area of low flow. Another solid bet is Shanghai Falls. The salmon fly hatch is producing plenty of trout on the upper stretches of the Klamath, and the lower river is featuring a decent salmon bite.
In the lower end of the Sacramento you will find fair fishing for Striped Bass, especially along Colusa. The shad are also good, especially along the upper stretches of the river. In Trinity, you may find Salmon along the lower river but they have not yet moved upstream.
Delta fishing has been slow. The bass bite in Frank's Tract is definitely slow. While Stripers are finally begin to appear, most of them are schoolies. The majority of the catch for Striped bass in the Rio Vista is measured not in pounds but in inches. Some legal bass are being caught in the deeper waters along Rio Vista as well as the sloughs. Catfish are beginning to appear around the sloughs as well. Finally, the striped bass are finally becoming increasingly active at Tracy, with most catches ranging from 20 inches to 22 inches. The black bass bite has been slow as a result of the wind, and catfish are plentiful but they are small.
Saltwater fishing has been hit or miss depending on where you go. In Berkeley and Emeryville there was a mix of stripers, halibut and rock cod caught this week. It has generally been too rough to get all the way to the beaches, but there are stripers that can be found in the surf. The Happy Hooker trip on Wednesday had eight halibut and stripers with an hour worth of fishing remaining. Striped bass can be found along Pacifica, especially between Mussel Rock and Mori point and especially during the morning hours. The best bait here are pencil poppers and hair raisers. There are plenty of 20 lb bass here.
Windy weather is creating rough seas at Pillar Point, which has made the fishing rough lately. Boats were unable to get out over this past weekend, and it may continue. Big tides are slowing the halibut fishing in the South San Francisco Bay. You can find striped bass along the Oakland Airport area. The San Pablo Bay is providing a persistent halibut bite if you can handle the tides. The hot spot as of late has been Paradise. Finally, you can find some decent sized sturgeon at the Suisun Bay especially along the Martinez Pier. The first row of ships here is another good fishing spot, especially if you come packing anchovies and grass shrimp when you visit here.
