Fishing Report: June 10, 2011

Lake fishing has seen a lot of improvement this week with a few plants. Trout is the best catch in most locations.

Berryessa: Best spots for this week are in between Big Island, the Narrows and Ranch House. Fishing for bass is best done at above 15 feet. Best bait to use includes slow fishing with robo-worm on a Carolina rig or using grubs with a 1/8 oz. darthead. The bass are post spawn in most cases. Fishing for kokanee is possible from 25 to 40 feet with 40 feet being the depth for the end of the day. Best colors for these include white, orange and pink. Shad is a good bait used at the north end of the lake.

Chabot: Trout have been biting good in areas like Coots Landing, the Burner and Indian Cove. Best bait includes orange Power Eggs and chartreuse Power Bait. Catfish are also biting good with average sizes increasing. Fish near Raccoon Point for best bites.

Contra Loma: Crappie can be found close to Loma Island or Channel Point. Catfish are also biting good on chicken liver and cutbait. Look near the boat ramp to get the best catches. Fishing from the shore is a great bet to catch bass at any point along the bank. Use nightcrawlers and Power Bait to get the best results.

Del Valle: Near tules in the south end and across from the Marina are best locations for bass. Trout fishing has also been very good dues a plant from Mount Lassen on Tuesday of this week. Look near upper Narrows as well as near the dam to get a few bites.

Lafayette: This lake also got a trout plant from Mount Lassen this week. With the cool temperatures of the water remaining in the 60s, it is likely that there could be two more plants for the month of June. Limit catches have been reported for trout as well as some good catches for catfish. Look at the south end of the lake as well as on the east side for catfish. Use nightcrawlers and powerbait to get a bite. Fishing from the docks on the east side as well as off L-dock with nightcrawlers have gotten some good catfish bites. Troller should set their depth for 20 feet.

Los Vaqueros: Catfish fishing is good this week with five catfish being caught in the 20 pound range. The biggest being a 22.1 pounder caught with anchovies in the South Cove. Stripers were also large with many ranging from 8 – 12 pounds and one hitting 15 pounds.

Quarry Lakes: 9.3 pound trout was biggest catch using fire tiger Rapala. Boaters had the best luck with the biggest fish. Best spot this week was at the Peninsula. Fisherman’s Row also saw some good action this week.

San Pablo Reservoir: A few limits were caught with most anglers getting at least a fish or two. Best catch was a 12 pound trout with the hottest spot for boaters being Farrel’s Landing near the dam and Rock Wall. Shore anglers had the best luck at the Main Rec. Wednesday a 1,200 pound trout plant went in.

Shadow Cliffs: Bait fishing is the order of the day to get results over artificial lures. Some limits being caught with most getting on to two fish. Good trout fishing found at the docks along the trail.

River fishing has been productive with many limits being caught.

American: Gristmill has seen the highest concentration of fish. Widespread fish can be found between Watt Avenue and Sailor Bar. Good bites found throughout the day with night being the best. Shad bites range from 6 – 20 fish each time out.

Napa: South River has seen the bulk of sturgeon catches with a few reported above Cutting’s Warf. Bullhead, live mudsuckers, anchovies and cut sardines are popular to catch striped bass up to 26 inches.

Russian: Muddied water conditions prevailed with a weekend rain pushing the river to 900 cubic feet per second. Shad was all but impossible.

Delta fishing has been slower this week with high winds keeping most boaters off of the water.

Antioch: Wind has been keeping a lot of people away, but there has been some action with sturgeon near Pittsburgh. Less action has been seen with the stripers.

Benicia: Best fishing here is the striper with up to 26 inches being caught under the Benicia Bridge, at 12th street, and near the state park. Pile worms and ghost shrimp are the best bet to get in on the productive sturgeon bites the week.

Franks Tract: Near tules and under vegetation in the shallows is best place to find bass this week. The Yamamoto tournament produced an 11 pound bass. Average weight was 4 pounds with Senkos getting the best catches.

Pittsburg: Shore anglers had the most luck with small striped bass. The wind kept most boaters out of the water.

Rio Vista: Rio Vista Bridge saw the best striped bass bite this week with the best catch weighing in at 9 pounds.

Tracy: Still no crappie to report, but catfish bites are getting better. Grant Line Canal saw the best luck with a few good striper being pulled in.

Saltwater fishing has been good for halibut and stripers in different areas.

Berkeley: Bass is outperforming halibut this week. Live baits have been pulling in striped bass up to 10 pounds and halibut up to 18 pounds. Duxbury saw all of the major catches for the New Easy Rider with the Happy Hooker having luck in South Bay for weekend potluck tours. Catches included salmon up to 27 pounds.

Emeryville: Monday marks the open of rock cod season. Expect to see a few halibut. Schools of striper are swimming. Pot-luck boats have been catching mixed numbers of each.

San Francisco: Best Spot Includes Alameda Rock Wall with the best fish being striped bass up to 20 pounds. Average weights are between 5 and 10 pounds. Better tides late in the week should help with striped bass and halibut pulls. Oyster Point Pier was productive for sharks and rays.

San Pablo Bay: If you are looking for the best bites, go to the area above Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Winds stopped fishing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sunday saw good sturgeon tides.

Suisun Bay: Whiel striper fishing is slow this week, expect to find sturgeon in good numbers near the Ozol and close to the pier at Martinez.
