Fishing Report: June 19, 2009

troutOcean Beach has been virtually swimming in tiny shrimp, which is perhaps the cause for the striped bass finding their way into the surf. The bass have been biting crazy here, especially late in the nights and in the early mornings. Fishermen have been pulling out bass as large as 25 lbs, many of which were caught just before the sun greeted the morning on top water plugs. In Pillar Point, similar reports have come from the jetties. More stories still have come from places as far away as Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Half Moon Bay's beaches.

As always, there is plenty of fishing throughout the lakes of the area. Fishermen's Row in Quarry Lakes managed to catch a handful of fish in the nice 3 lb to 6 lb range using power bait, and trout have been caught by numerous trollers. At Shadow Cliffs, you'll find plenty of trout following a 500 lb plant. The San Pablo Reservoir is offering plenty of trout in the deeper waters. Baits are being chosen over trolled offerings in general. If you are looking for bass here, try the launch ramp at Scow Canyon.

Amador has become something of a warm water fishery, offering bluegill, catfish and bass. For the bass, use plastic worms or night crawlers. Seek out the catfish in the backs of all of the coves. Near structure you will find Bluegill if you have worms and bobbers. If you are looking for a good trout fish, give the Comanche a try either late or early in the morning in the deeper waters. Bass can be found along the brush and the rocky shorelines.

Kokanee fishing has been particularly good on the main lake at New Melones, especially during the early morning and among trollers at between 50 feet and 65 feet. Bass fishing and catfish fishing have also been excellent. All of the fishing docks have been closed in Contra Loma because of low water. Luckily, there is still access by way of the shoreline. The pickings are slim, with no trout plants having appeared since June. Dell Valle is offering much greater trout fishing results, especially in the deeper water near the dam. You will also find catfish on the lake's south end as well as striped bass.

Bring night crawlers and power bait to Lafayette to catch bites from trout along the East Cove. Trolling will bring you trout along the southern end of the lake. You can't throw a lure without finding catfish. If you're around the L dock, you may be able to find some nice Bluegill and Bass. Trout fishing has also been solid around Los Vacqueros, especially along the south cove and the rock wall. Bring small spinners, night crawlers and power bait for the best results. Bass is not doing as well here, but solid results can be found sporadically.

Trout fishing is definitely solid at Chabot, with plenty of larger fish surfacing in and around Raccoon Point. There are plenty of 12 inch planters that can be found within this mix, with some fair fishing for Bass mixed in. In the north end of Clear Lake you will find plenty of bass, residing in the four ft and six ft areas of water after finishing their recent spawning cycle. In the early morning you can find decent bite top water, and decent catches are being had by those with Senkos, Flukes and Drop shot rigs. Most are between 2 lbs and 3 lbs with some 4 lb and 5 lb bass mixed in.

The American river is offering plenty of Shad through Discovery Park and the Nimbus Dam. In the right low light conditions, you may hit large striped bass chasing after the Shad. The shad bite is a little slower around the Russian, especially in Healdsburg. In Sacramento, you will find Shad biting between Red Bluff and Chico, and outstanding trout fishing to be had in Redding.

Wind has been a bother lately in Tracy, so you are not going to find much more than catfish and striped bass on the smaller side. In Rio Vista, the same is true, as anglers have been kept off the water on account of wind. You will find plenty of catfish here, though. Frank's tract is throwing up a lot of weeds and heavier setups are beginning to surface as a result. Action is relatively slow for this part of the season.

If saltwater fishing is more your thing, there are five points worth checking out this week. There have been plenty of party boats out in Berkeley and Emeryville, fishing off of the flats in Mel's Reef, Paradise, Red Rock and Berkeley to score a mixed bag of mostly striped bass and halibut. Pillar point is offering Rock cod fishing on Saturday north of Pigeon Point by reservation. The main bay in San Francisco is attracting a lot of attention, but do not forget about the stripers and halibut which can be found at Candlestick Point.

Sturgeon fishing has been particularly productive at Ozol, the Glomar and the Martinez pier in the Suisun Bay. The top bait for the Sturgeon here is definitely grass shrimp. It would also be worthwhile to check out the San Pablo Bay, where bass limits and halibut limits are not uncommon. Sink a life bait and you are sure to find fish pretty much all over the bay.

Pedro Point's Rockfish season just opened up above Pigeon Point last Saturday, and limits of rockfish are already being pulled out. The bass are biting here as well, especially along Mussel Rock, though it has taken patience in order to see results.

The hot lures for this week seem to be quarter ounce to three ounce worm tail jigs, green, blue and white swim baits, Kastmasters with bucktails and Gibbs' top water offerings.
