Fishing Report: June 5th, 2009

tomalesbayThe fishing has been hit or miss this week, with some great scores and some less than ideal hauls.

In Pacifica you will still find crab snares for sale through Coastside II Bait and Tackle, because a variety of crustaceans are still being reeled in up on the pier walkway, including Dungeness crab for example. On Wednesday, a number of anglers posed with line-sided bass, and photos now hang in the shop to commemorate this catch.

Tomales Bay, which you will find along the far end of the inland reach near Inverness recently offered an incredible catch - A Seven foot long, 250lb Thresher shark caught by a man named Ross Corbett. He says he's been fishing in the bay for his entire life.

The rockfish season has finally opened up just below Pigeon Point. Half Moon Bay Sportfishing is receiving mostly business on the weekends with more expected interest coming up when the season opens up above the Pigeon Point, especially through the Gulf of the Farallones and up into Mendocino.

Out of Monterey you will find 32 limits of rockfish, plenty of olives, yellows and reds and even some ling cod. The shoreliners are still out and about in search of striped bass along the surf. Although there has not been a ton of luck, some fishermen did manage to bring in a few.

Into the Monterey Bay you will see plenty of live bait, and the anchovy are still relatively small but their color tells the fishermen in the area that they are finally maturing. The fishing action in the bay was certainly well received by the fishermen there.

In the American River, shad have been especially potent with 30 and 40 fish days. A group on Tuesday caught so many fish before the early evening that they called it a night early. There are plenty of Shad on the Feather River through Shanghai Bend, and you will probably also find plenty of fish in the Yuba. You will find bigger and more willing schools of fish along the Watt Avenue stretch of the American River. Closer to the bay you are going to find the beginnings of the Shad run, especially in the Russian River. So far it is mostly all males but the action is fair. You may also find striped bass following the Shad along the stream, especially near Johnson's Beach.

Lake fishing has been particularly good this week. A 5,000 lb plant of trout recently went into Amador. With predatory rip baits, you may be able to find Bass along the backs of the coves here. In the Camanche, you will find Bass along the shallows as well as in the backs of the coves, and trout fishing has also been particularly successful both for shore anglers and trollers. You may also find Crappie fishing along the Oregon Gulch and the Causeway.

The Clear Lake fishing is pretty good right now, as many of the bass have completed their spawning. The best producers right now seem to be Senkos, drop shot and jigs. The bass tend to average around three lbs right now, although there are a lot falling into the five lb class as well. Davis is offering a wide open trout bite right now with plenty of excellent trout fishing up for grabs.

Del Valle is offering plenty of striped bass with a dramatic improvement in numbers this week. Action in the Lafayette is relatively slow right now because the waters are murky. Trout fishing has been fair at Los Vaqueros, and the fish have moved somewhat deeper than before. If you're looking for good bass fishing, you might consider stopping by New Melones, especially if you are stocking Carolina-rigged worms, spinner baits and brush hogs.

In the San Pablo Reservoir, fishermen have landed more than fifty separate trout weighing in at more than five pounds a piece, so the fishing is pretty good here. Bait fishing is definitely the best avenue for you to pursue here. Trolling has been relatively slow, as has bass fishing unfortunately.

In Trinity and Lewiston, bass fishing seems to remain steady both for the small mouth and large mouth varieties. Bass are all over the lake off the point. Large trout are appearing all over the lake since Lewiston started to run water through this past Monday. If you use white Power Eggs and worms along the dam, both trolling and fishing work relatively well.

Quarry lakes trout fishing has also managed to pick up significantly ever since a trout plant occurred midway through the week. Fishermen have managed to land a handful of six and eight pound trout. The hot spot here is the Peninsula, but there are also improvements worth checking out at Fishermen's Row.

As far as saltwater fishing goes, twenty pound halibut were surfacing along the Berkeley Pier for four different anglers. The trick here was live shiners, which seemed to be what the Halibut were biting for this week. In the San Francisco Bay, there have been high winds and big tides which have slowed the fishing down for Halibut quite considerably. The muddied waters has not really affected the fishing for striper, which still remains far out along the San Bruno shoreline and bird cage.

In San Pablo Bay you will find that the water is muddied from recent windy weather, so prospects have not been great for Halibut, bass or sturgeon. Check out the Pumphouse for Sturgeon, the Marin Shoreline and the China Camp for bass and Paradise for halibut. The sturgeon bite is particularly good at Suisun bay at the first three ship rows. The most productive bait here has been grass shrimp so far.

As far as delta fishing goes, check out Frank's Tract, Rio Vista and Tracy for decent fishing. Black bass are moving into the banks and their spawning beds in Frank's Tract where three pound catches are becoming common. Fishing is slowing a bit at the Rio Vista, but it is still good for Stripers and Sturgeon. Finally, there are plenty of big bass including large and small mouth at Tracy, but striped bass has slowed a little in recent days.
