Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut
At Berkeley/Emeryville, bait fisherman can now go for bass and halibut. The first trips were pretty productive with several fish pulled in. Bass weight up to 7 pounds while the halibut max was about 15 pounds.
Suisun Bay hasn't changed much over the last few weeks, with the Ozol as the usual hot spot for sturgeon. Four were caught at the Martinez Pier this week, too. Most that are getting a good sturgeon bite are using grass shrimp, and some are as far out as Buoy 2 near the Mothball Fleet.
At San Pablo Bay, halibut fisherman had decent luck last week even despite the poor weather conditions. Sunday saw one angler pull in 3 decent sized fish with one up to 12 pounds in just a couple of hours near Paradise and San Quentin. Stick to depths of only about 12 to 15 feet to try to reproduce his luck. Stripers are biting okay, but the best results are coming in near the Whaling Station.
San Francisco Bay's hotspots have shifted back to the Birdcage for halibut, with some weight up to 20 pounds coming out there. Hang near Genentech for stripers. Those sticking to the pier are getting quite a bit of smelt.
Rio Vista has had a rough time lately because of the muddy water and the wind, but that eased off this week leaving hope that this weekend will be a good time to try again. Frank’s Tract had a fishing tournament last week that brought in a 9 pound bass. They're biting for crankbaits and Senkos, but the stripers are being finicky and not biting well overall. Trollers are having better luck than shore anglers especially with frozen shad.
Tracy's been having a wind problem, too, that should be all but gone this weekend. Shore anglers are getting a few catfish, but the fishing overall isn't very good right now. At Pacifica, shore anglers had been doing really well with stripers, but they haven't been biting this week. Pier crabbing is still catching a few but not many.
By now, up to 2 million baby, Chinook salmon have been put into the American River to try to keep them from becoming extinct in the area with another million going into the river in the near future.
Trout
Lake Amador had a 3,000-pound plant scheduled for this week with many of the fish weighing more than usually plant fish. The lake is still close to full, with anglers having the best luck with nightcrawlers. At Folsom, the lake is about eleven feet away from being full, with bass seeming to hover in the top 15 or 20 feet.
The San Pablo Reservoir has benefit from huge amounts of trout in the last few months, totaling over 8 tons in all. Thanks to that, the trout bite is getting better all the time. Catfish are doing pretty well, too, with a 19 lb cat making the best catch last week. The angler found the big cat by the dam and used Power Bait to attract it. Stick with bait right now because the water's dark.
The Lafayette Reservoir got a 2,000 lb rainbow trout plant last week, so the bite is expected to improve over the next couple of weeks from that alone, as well as the many plants that have been going in regularly this year. Catfish are starting to bite a bit better, and bass are biting but not with any type of consistency. Trollers, stick to the south of the lake and use Rapalas for the best results right now.
At Los Vaqueros, the overall bite is very good right now. Some of the Coves are hanging on to be hot spots for bass, and the Rock Wall is giving anglers their limits in trout. The top fish this week was a 12 lbs striper, following by a 7 lb rainbow trout. Rainbows are biting near the Oak Point Pier where the 7-pounder was pulled out. Blass bass are biting well, too.
Quarry Lakes has another top fish of 10 lbs this week, with an angler using green Power Eggs to get the trout. Stick to morning trolling or bait fishing for trout, and try near the Peninsula, where most morning fishermen are pulling them in pretty steadily. Shadow Cliffs still has trout biting but not as vigorously as a couple of weeks ago. No one's getting their limits, but almost everyone gets at least one or two.
At Berryessa, Senkos and plastic worms are the lures of choice for bass right now, with the best biting in the various coves. Anglers are getting a few different types of bass with sizes up to 4 pounds, but lots of very small fish, too. At San Luis, the 152 Bridge is a good spot for bait fishermen and the island's good for boaters trying to catch bass.
Lake Chabot is in the midst of a month trout derby with the biggest fish coming out so far weighing in at 13 lbs and 8 oz. The angler used a Kastmaster to haul it in. The best trout bite right now seems to be in Half Moon Bay and near Indian Cove. Lake Camanche anglers should stick to the South Shore Pond, one of the usual hot spots for trout around the lake, because it's probably the best place for biting right now. Plastics are working well for bass, with shore anglers having better luck in water down to about 15 to 20 feet.
Contra Loma is still active around Channel Point but the fish are biting near the boat ramp, too, at least catfish and trout are biting there. Anglers should get out early in the morning as some are pulling in trout up to 5 pounds.
At Del Valle, a 10 lb 11 oz trout was caught this week near the dam, making it the biggest one to come out of the water recently. The same angler pulled in an 8-pounder, too. If you want to have his luck, mimic his actions by using Rapalas, which pulled in both those big fish. If you're looking for bass or cats, hang near the Marina, but head for the Narrows and Hetchy for trout.
