Fishing Report: May 21, 2010

Sturgeon, Salmon and Halibut

At Berkeley/Emeryville, 12 anglers got 7 salmon over the weekend, and 26 got 44 halibut. They also got a few striped bass. The biggest halibut from the trip topped out at 15 pounds and the biggest salmon was 16 pounds. Capitola is a good place to fish at night right now. Stay around the surf line for striped bass and the pier for mackerel and sardines. Suisun Bay is still steady with most anglers having the best luck using grass or ghost shrimp at the Ozol and Martinez Pier, or out near the Mothball Fleet and the second buoy.

At San Pablo Bay, you can get live shiners for the weekend. China Camp is best for boaters right now, but shore fishermen are having the best luck near the Paradise and McNear's piers. They're pulling out both halibut and stripers from those areas.  San Francisco Bay's hotspots have shifted to Oyster Point for stripers and halibut and Candlestick Point for stripers, too. They're both biting well in the morning at Genentech Point, and the Brisbane Tubes has them biting fairly well in the afternoon.

At Monterey, the rock cod boats made it to Point Sur over the weekend. Pacifica was calm over the weekend with no one really reporting any striper action. Pier crabbing's doing fairly well again. The water's cold at Pillar Point, and gave up 6 fish per people on a weekend rock cod trip.

Rio Vista's not clear yet but it's much better than it has been lately. Biting should start to improve. Frank's Tract anglers are using Senkos and crankbaits, but even those aren’t getting much action. Shad is still best for trollers. Tracy's inconsistent with the wind and the hope is that it will be calm over the weekend, as fishing there has been poor lately.

Trout

Lake San Antonio has both bass and catfish biting well, with stripers really biting actively in Harris Creek. Lake Nacimiento is a hot spot for crappie fishing this week. Stick to the Dip Creek, the beach and the dam. Dip Creek is also a good place for white bass. Lake Amador is almost full, and the bite's pretty good thanks to recent plants.

The San Pablo Reservoir trout bite is still improving, but not dramatically. Cats are biting and some are fairly large. Use bright bait like Power Bait until the water gets even clearer. The San Luis Reservoir is giving good results with live bait and crankbait. Most of the bass being caught here right now are under 7 pounds.  Santa Margarita Lake isn't giving fishermen very good luck right now as the crappie and the bass aren't biting well. Try Murphy's Bay if you want to up your odds of catching some bass. Quarry Lakes didn't have any more record fish catches this week, but had a 750 pound trout plant on Tuesday, and they're biting around the Peninsula, with some having good luck fishing near Fishermen's Row, too. Horseshoe Lake is the spot for catfish right now.

At Pardee, the trout are biting pretty well with many Kokanee hovering in the top 40 feet of water in the main part of the lake and the river mouth area.  At Parkway, a sturgeon that weighed almost 29 pounds came out this week at the Peninsula. Use nightcrawlers to try to duplicate that fisherman's haul. Cheese bait and nightcrawlers are also pulling out cats. For trout, anglers are getting their limits in the back cove using bright orange, chartreuse and yellow Power Bait.

At McClure, stick around McClure Point and fish in the top 80 feet of water. Fish up to 4 pounds are biting on things like shad, purple ghost hoochies and anchovies, with king salmon really biting well for trollers. Loch Lomond offered up 2 5-pound bass this week, thanks to a fairly good bass bite. The bluegills are starting to bite, too.

Kokanee trout are biting great at New Melones right now, typically sticking to the top 40 feet of water. Hang around Coyote Creek for the best luck. Uvas has cats, crappie and bass all biting, but not consistently or in huge numbers.  At McAlpine, afternoon and evening fishing is the best time to catch cats. They're biting best right now for nightcrawlers. Spinnerbaits are hauling in decent numbers of bass, and big trout are biting for anglers using yellow Power Bait.

The Lafayette Reservoir is still getting regular plants and the biting is fairly steady, at least for small trout. The catfish bite is improving, but the bass bite is still hard to find. Rapalas are still the best bet, especially in the south of the lake. Fish are still biting well at Los Vaqueros, with the coves the best spots for bass. Try near the Rock Wall for trout against this week. Oak Point Pier is still a good spot for rainbows. Both Clear Lake and Coyote are poor bass spots, but crappie are biting at Coyote in the dam area. Bass are finished spawning at Clear and have all but disappeared.

At Berryessa, fishermen are leaving the lake happy, getting 30 fish an outing using grubs. The bass bite has exploded, with most coming in under 3 pounds. Lake Chabot gave up a trout of 8.2 pounds over the weekend, making it the biggest fish to be caught there this week. Bill Theuriet caught the fish and now sits in second place of the trout derby that's scheduled to end on May 30th.

Lake Camanche's typical hot spot, the South Shore Pond, is still a great place for trout but don't expect to get your limit there. Shore anglers are having the best luck with bass in the top 20 feet of water. Morning fishing is still your best bet at Contra Loma, with small trout to 5 pounds biting near the boat ramp and Channel point. Some cats are biting too, but not as well as last week. At Del Valle, Hetchy is still the best place for smallmouth bass, but the trout aren't biting as well there this week. In fact, few trout are biting anywhere on the lake.
