Striped Bass, Crab and Halibut
In Berkeley/Emeryville, people are still pulling in their limit of crab. Bass are still biting, and the halibut and bass fishing is slowly improving. But if you're looking for crab, this is the place to be as people have been pulling in their limit consistently. At Pacifica, the choppy surf from a week ago gave way to a rolling surf last week. It's still giving people problems when fishing from the pier, and the crabs are too small. People using sardines and anchovies, however, could pull in an average of 2 decent crab an hour.
Suisun Bay, near the ships, is proving good for striped bass. Garnett Point and Mothball fleet, as well as near Buoy 2, are good for bass, as well. Live bullheads at a depth of about 30 feet are pulling in plenty of stripers. Hang near the Glomar for sturgeon.
San Pablo Bay is suffering from its slow tides, but this is supposed to change so fishing should improve. There aren't many people fishing for halibut here, but some are coming out that weigh over 20 pounds. A sturgeon came out of San Francisco Bay this week at Alameda with herring used as bait. Fishing is still slow and poor, though, unless you're looking for rays and sharks.
At Frank's Tract, Lunker Plunker is the word of the day, as those topwater plugs are pulling in big striped bass, some over 30 pounds. Jibs and bright baits are still working best for black bass, but they're not biting well.
At Tracy, live bait is working best for striped bass, but they're not easy to find as the water is a bit still. When you find a school of bass, you can do quite well but this is proving to be a challenge. The tides at Rio Vista made it a poor fishing spot last week but that's expected to improve this weekend and into next week. The choice bait is the same this week as last, with shad and mudsuckers bringing in the bass and sturgeon once they're found. The best spot for bass seems to be near the bridge, while the sturgeon are being pulled out near Decker Island and the Slough.
Trout
At Amador, 3 to 4 pound trout are hovering near the surface, thanks to about 3,000 fish being added to the lake every week. Anglers are having the best luck with live bait and Rapalas. Some bass are coming out of the lake, near the surface. Catfish are also biting in Lake Amador, and some anglers are having luck fishing from the shore. Last week, two catfish weighing more than 20 pounds each were caught this way.
Lake Chabot is still benefiting from the ton of trout put in a few weeks ago, and they're still hanging low. Most are 1 to 2 pounds, with many pulled up near the west shore. Half Moon Bay is the best place for trollers as well as areas near the island bank. Bass and catfish biting slowed down last week.
Lake Camanche is giving up great trout to trollers this week, especially in the area between the dam and Hat Island. Those hanging close to both the north shore and the South Shore Pond are doing well with trout, too. Plastic lures and jigs are pulling in bass near the north shore. Last week's bass tournament on Lake Camanche saw one angler pull in a catfish that weighed in at over 20 pounds, so the big cat are there if you can find them.
At Shasta, bait balls and Kastmasters are working the best for trout, but still the trout and bass fishing is spotty. Rip baits are pulling in a few bass from about a 20 foot depth, but the trout, when they're biting, are hovering near the surface.
Quarry Lake is still really good for trout, with anglers still often pulling in their limits of 5 to 7 pound fish, thanks to recent plants. People seem to be catching about as much whether they're trolling or fishing from the shore, so there aren't any hot spots to speak of. Fishing lake-wide has been superb for at least a few weeks, and that looks to continue.
At the Lafayette Reservoir, about 1,000 small trout went in this week, most around 2 pounds, and anglers have been catching them regularly. The bait of choice for these trout over the last week seems to have been nightcrawlers or Power Bait, with fishing still best in the morning hours. The second week of December will see another trout plant go in which should improve biting even more. Catfish are biting all across the reservoir, with no particular hot spots showing up this week.
Berryessa Lake is still doing well with the bass biting in the areas near the damn, and most in the northern part of the lake. Trout biting has picked up. They're still hovering near the surface, with the water temperature hanging in the mid-50s. Del Valle's pretty good for trout and bass right now. Fishing in shallow areas like the Narrows and the Marina is a good best for trout fishing, with a 6 pound trout being the top fish to bite last week. Because striped bass are eating the small trout that have been added to the lake, the Marina is especially good for bass biting. The largest striper to come out of Del Valle last week was 8 pounds.
New Melones Lake has been great for trout biting over the last few weeks, and it's still offering up great trout to both trollers and those fishing from the shore. Power Bait is still working well, and many anglers are using Kastmasters with great results in areas like Glory Hole Cove and Angels Cove, as well as Tuttletown.
Los Vaqueros had another trout plant a week ago Friday which improved the biting over the weekend, especially with anglers using Power Bait, but through the week it declined. Instead, some anglers are pulling out 3 to 5 pound salmon.
Salmon
Rainfall has helped open up the North Coast Rivers. Eel River was closed two weeks ago and is now giving anglers salmon of 30 pounds and more. Some 40 pound salmon are also coming up now that the river is flowing again. Van Duzen is also seeing salmon of that size. Stay in the lower parts of both rivers for the best luck. Trinity is still not good for fishing, but the steelhead biting is expected to improve over the weekend if the rains come as predicted.
The Smith is still producing quality salmon and steelhead, and the Chetco is also a good spot for anglers right now. Be sure and check the state of the river before you go, especially with rivers like the Eel, Mad and Van Duzen, which had been closed recently because of low flow.
