Lake Fishing -
In Amador, a weekly plant comprised of 3,000 lbs just went in this past Tuesday. The ticket here is definitely going to be power bait. Most fish are being caught around the topmost five feet in the water here. The trout have generally been averaging around 4lbs here. At Berryessa, the lake is definitely far from turning over with the daytime temperatures sitting around the 70s, and so the fish are not quite yet at the top of the surface so the pressure has been light here.
In the Camanche, the water temperatures are dropping down to the mid 60 range, and the trout fishing has therefore been quite outstanding. 40 trout to as many as 7lbs were caught by a pair of fishermen during the earlier part of the week. Take Rapalas and troll around the surface for the best results. Bass fishing has been fair, especially along the rocky areas and in fifteen feet or so of water. The Pond in the South Shore has been receiving stock for about a month, and so fishing has been productive. Limits have been common for trout to as many as 3lbs each.
In Chabot, the trout are taking power bait, especially in the Bass Cove. The catfish on the other hand seem to be more active around the island. There have been weekly trout plants coming from a private hatchery as of late, and the Department of Fish and Game is also adding catchable trout every other week as well. In Contra Loma, the lake's water level has been dropping for the purpose of canal repair and as of late the fishing docks have also been closed. Anglers would be able to fish from the shore, and it seems that trout fishing has not been that bad. You can expect to get between two and three with each outing.
At Davis, the trout fishing has been outstanding for all methods, including bait fishing, trolling and fly fishing, which are all bringing in dozens of caught fish between 17 and 20 inches each. The best area for shore fishing has been the Fairview area. Fly fishermen are doing particularly well along the northeast corner, and the trollers seem to be catching fish just about everywhere. In Del Valle, this past Tuesday was excellent for big fish. Trout fishing has been food, especially along the Marina and Dam during the morning hours.
Lafayette just received its very first trout plant for the reason, and this has significantly perked up the prospects for the area. Limits have been brought in throughout the week. Night crawlers, power bait and Rapalas have all been good offerings here. Another plant is scheduled for this upcoming week. For catfish, it would benefit you to try the east cove. In Los Vaqueros, the fishing has been slow but you will find the odd catfish or striped bass biting. There are no consistent catches her to speak of. Even trout fishing has been relatively sporadic as of late, but there is a plant going in this weekend.
In New Melones, the trout plantings have recently begun and this makes the bank anglers a lot more productive. The best place for trout has been the creek mouths when you come with live minnows. The bass are feeding on shad off the points, and when it is windy, the swim baits tend to work particularly well. In Shasta, the bass are being found between the surface and around 40 feet down, and their bait of choice is definitely swim baits along with six inch worms and top water offerings. The trout are also in the shallows this week and giving preference to shad. Choose kastmsters or spoons in small sizes. If you seek salmon, check the 40 to 60 foot deep range.
Finally, in Quarry Lakes the trout fishing is making improvements and anglers are beginning to pull out limits when they use power bait and kastmasters along fishermen's row as well as the peninsula.
River Fishing -
In the North Coast Rivers, the salmon can be found in the tidewaters of the Smith, Eel and Mad. All that is going to be needed here is a little bit of rain, which is actually going to be expected during the weekend. In the Trinity, the salmon run is already over, and steelhead will be around in December or so.
Delta Fishing -
In Frank's Tract, the striped bass fishing is good for anyone with drifted baits including swim baits and top water lures. Many of the fish are in a size worth keeping. The fishing for black bass has been difficult. In the Rio Vista, fishing is improving with the weather, but things will improve even more as things cool down. The stripers can be found between Collinsville and Rio Vista Bridge. At Tracy, the striped bass are coming into the Grant Line canal and there are many legal bass here to be caught. The fishing for black bass on the other hand is proving to be a little more difficult, and the fishing for catfish has slowed down. The best hours this week are in the evening.
Saltwater Fishing -
In Berkeley and Emeryville, the sand dab and crab trips are beginning this weekend. There are potluck trips going out for halibut and bass this week. At Pillar Point, crab trip reservations are being taken as the season is slated to begin on Saturday. In the San Francisco Bay, sharks and rays are being produced mainly by the South Bay area, and halibut fishing in the area has been slow.
In the San Pablo Bay, the fishing has slowed somewhat this week. Weekend sturgeon fishing should improve following a front. The halibut fishing has only been fair but should improve, and striper fishing appears to be slowing. At the Suisun Bay, the sturgeon fishing seems to be particularly good between Garnet Point and Pittsburg. The striped bass can be found nearly everywhere. The key to good quality fishing for stripers is going out with live bullhead as bait.
