Here's what's happening in local fishing this week.
Lake Fishing -
Fishing is relatively slow at Amador. The trout plants have not yet begun yet, and are slated to begin when there is a consistent fall pattern, which is said to be around the middle of this month. Bass fishing has been relatively good in the main body of Berryessa. Drop shooting as well as spooning in 30 to 50 foot depths are generally resulting in pretty steady action.
Trollers in the Camanche are generally finding trout between 25 and 35 feet under the surface. The bass are generally moving to shallower waters, and can be found between 10 feet and 20 feet under the water. The catfish bite here is also relatively steady this week. After three weeks worth of trout plants in Chabot, the fishing still does not seem to be improving. The cool weather should definitely make an improvement by turning the bite on, however. The catfish are especially plentiful during the morning hours and the evening hours as well.
At Clear lake, algae blooms have slowed down the bass fishing, but the cooler weather is coming in and this should definitely solve the problem. The southern end has definitely been a top spot this week for anglers that are tossing crank baits and swim baits. At Contra Loma, you will find the catfish bite to be pretty good along Channel Point. The best baits here are chicken livers and night crawlers. There are trout plants going in, now, but the bite has not yet begun.
At Davis, trout fishing has been excellent for fly fishermen and trollers. The shore anglers have had a bit of spotty action, but the best bite that you are going to find can be found around Fairview as well as Mallard Cove. A 2,000 trout plant, each weighing about 2lbs, went in during the past week though so fishing should definitely improve. At Del Valle, the striped bass are definitely boiling over across the lake. The most consistent of all bites is going to be experienced around the dam. Many of these stripers are between 4 lbs and 7 lbs. The fishing for trout has slowed down but at least planting has started up here.
At Lafayette, the bluegill and the catfish have both been keeping the anglers quite occupied. The catfish are generally taking chicken livers when fished from the dock around the visitor center as well as the east cove. The bluegill seems to be primarily taking red worms, especially from the east cove and the L dock. The trout plants are going to begin around the end of this month. At Los Vaqueros, the trout fishing is ideal within around 1 to 2 days of planting. Another trout plant is currently planned for later on this week. Otherwise, the best bet here is going to be catfish.
At New Melones, trolling in search of trout has been so far productive in the main part of the lake as well as up the river. You can go down between 45 feet and 60 feet using Needlefish, Rapalas and Excels in bright colors for good results. When you go night fishing for trout, you will be successful if you use a submersible light. During the day, the most solid bite to be had here is for catfish.
In the San Pablo Reservoir, the top spots for finding catfish are Oak Point, Scow Canyon and around the Launch Ramp. In Shadow Cliffs, a trout plant of 500 lbs just went in this week, but a cool snap is going to be required in order for the bite to really get going. At Shasta, the bass are taking most top water offerings during the morning hours, up until the point where the sun and the water meet. Later on during the day you should use senkos or dart head worms. Trout are hanging out below about 60 feet of water around the dam as well as the Pit River arm. Spoons such as hoochies, humdingers and Kastmasters are especially useful here.
At Trinity and Lewiston, the light traffic and low water are making it difficult to fish. On the other hand, at Quarry Lakes you will find that a 1,250 lb trout plant is going in this week, which is the largest of all trout plants in the East Bay area.
River Fishing -
At Trinity, the salmon are beginning to fill many of the holes, and the bite appears to be improving. Conditions are good and so the bite is likely going to take off soon.
Delta Fishing -
At Frank's Tract, the fishing for striped bass has slowed somewhat. Some are being taken on swim baits, however. The best bite is generally at night, especially around the opening of the tract. The fishing for black bass has also been slow. At Rio Vista, prospects seem to be improving as a cool wind is coming in to bring the temperatures down. Trolling for stripers has been effective between Rio Vista and Sherman Island with Yozuri minnows. At Tracy, the stripers appear to be moving into the Grant Line Canal. Catfish also seem to be biting relatively well.
Saltwater Fishing -
At Berkeley and Emeryville, the potluck trips into the bay are bringing out around one to two halibut with every rod, and rock cod as well. Island trips are bringing out limits of cod. At Pillar Point, boats found limits of rock cod over the weekend, especially at around 100 feet to 120 feet depths. Some ling cod were also caught.
In the San Francisco Bay, the bite for halibut has been relatively slow, especially in the southern part of the bay. Shore anglers seem to be bringing out perch, sharks and rays. Boaters are scratching out one to two halibut for each rod around Berkeley. In the San Pablo Bay, the winds have been too great for fishing for much of the week but prospects are improving now, especially for halibut, sturgeon and stripers. Finally, at the Suisun Bay, the fishing for striped bass has been good at Glomar and Garnet Point.
