Lake Fishing -
In lake Amador, the trout fishing has been fairly stable following a 8,500 pound plant that went in during the past week. This week is going to see an additional 5,000 pound plant, and the water clarity has also been good. At Berryessa, the lake seems to have taken the rain in well and there isn't a lot of mud to speak of. The fishing conditions seem to be good this week.
At Chabot, the trout fishing has been ideal around Coot's Landing as well as the Burner. The bite for catfish has remained good this week. On Wednesday, a 12 lb catfish was pulled out of the water. Near the edges of the lake the water is somewhat murky, but is mostly clear. At Clear lake, if you bring lipless crank baits, crank baits and swim baits, then drop shotting will bring you solid results. The best areas to fish are still in the middle of the lake toward the south, and fishing near the top at 2 feet to 25 feet below the surface. The recent rain is working on removing the algae from the lake, which is improving the bass fishing here.
Contra Loma is currently pretty murky, and it is going to take some time before things settle down. On Tuesday, a trout plant went in. Despite this, the best fishing in the lake is still for bass and catfish. At Del Valle, stripers are coming up in the four to six lb range on a regular basis. The trout fishing is generally best around the dam area. The lake managed to come up a bit with the recent rain, and it is just a little murky but still quite fishable.
At Lafayette, the catfish seem to be the best bet because trout plants are not going to be getting started until the final week of this month. In the east cove you may be able to find a fairly decent bluegill bite. At Los Vaqueros, the Department of Fish and Game just put in a trout plant this past Wednesday, and 1,200 additional pounds went in later last week. These plants have greatly improved trout fishing prospects, and they have also helped to get the striped bass more active as well. The best spots right now are the South Cove and the Rock Wall, and you will find that the anglers here are out producing the boaters easily.
At New Melones, the trout seem to be moving closer along the surface, and the trollers here seem to be having good luck with rainbows at about 30 feet underneath the surface. The browns are going to be found deeper down. There are plentiful small bass to catch here as well. At the San Pablo Reservoir, the lake is going to be closed on Halloween, and yet the trout bite has still been fair since a plant went in about a week ago. The catfish bite is still stable. The lake climbed a foot in depth with the recent rain, and along the shoreline is it a bit muddy and murky. At Quarry Lakes, the cool weather and the more frequent plants of trout have improved fishing overall.
River Fishing -
At Klamath, the mouth just opened up during the weekend, and fishing here should improve as a result of the recent rain prospects. Many of the salmon here are being taken up the stream toward Weitchpec. In the North Coast Rivers, the Smith's todal water is producing fish, and the most recent rains has provided incentive for the fish to begin moving up the stream. Finally, the Trinity is currently up a couple of inches, but it should begin to drop over the weekend. Before the rain came, many of the salmon and steelhead were down below Big Bar and Del Loma.
Delta Fishing -
At Frank's Tract, last week's weather seems to have helped to move in the stripers. If you come with rip baits, spoons and crank baits you will be able to find bass in and around the 4lb class. The black bass on the other hand are a little harder to catch. At Rio Vista, the tournament last weekend had more sturgeon and stripers landed than in the previous year. The best bite has been on the incoming tide. Try Sandy Beach, Sherman Island as well as the Rio Vista Bridge in search of bass. Finally, at Tracy there have been great improvements in fishing for striped bass. Last week, an angler trolling in the Grant Line Canal landed a 42 lb striped bass. Swim baits are also attracting a pretty consistent bite this week.
Saltwater Fishing -
At Berkeley and Emeryville, the potluck boats going out are coming back with rock cod limits as well as a decent number of lings. The boats have been stopping along the way back to scratch out some halibut as well. At Pillar Point, party boats have been pulling rock cod limits out of San Gregorio on weekends. One boat managed to score 3/4 limits fishing off of Pescadero.
In the San Francisco Bay, the halibut fishing has been concentrated along the main bay and off of Alcatraz and Berkeley. The South Bay has been slow, and a lot of the action here has consisted of rays and sharks. In the San Pablo Bay on the other hand, the sturgeon conditions have been especially excellent. There have been optimal tides and the rain has contributed to the good bite, here. You should plan on fishing on the anchor, using mud suckers to catch sturgeon and stripers here. Finally, the striped bass in the Suisun Bay are finally beginning to move up in the direction of the delta. If you are looking for a solid bait to fish here, try the live bullhead, and try fishing at the Mothball Fleet for solid results.
