Lake Fishing -
At Amador, a 3,000 lb trout plant just went in, some of which were as large as 10 lbs, this past Tuesday. Both boaters and float tubers that are using bait and lures seem to do better in comparison to the trollers. You can probably trigger a bite with anything with chartreuse. At Berryessa, there was a small bass tournament over the past weekend, and the winner managed to catch a five fish limit with 17lbs, the largest fish weighing in at 5.7 pounds. The lake's main body has been attracting a great deal of action as of late.
At the Camanche, you can attract rainbows that are 5 lbs with top line trolling, especially with Needlefish, Rapalas and Ex-Cel lures. You should drop to about 25 or 35 feet below the surface as soon as the sun starts to hit the water for the best results. The plants for trout have also begun, meaning that fishing has been relatively consistent here. You can find bass fish approximately 15 feet to 20 feet underneath the surface. At Chabot, the trout limits are starting to come up for those that soak power bait. The water has been murky, so using bait is definitely going to be the best way for you to go. The trout plants are going in every week, and this week two are going in. The best spot so far has been Coot's Landing this week. Near Half Moon Bay and the Island you may still be able to find catfish.
At Contra Loma, the trout bite is improving to the point where it is beginning to attract anglers. This last Saturday, someone caught a 6 lb trout close to the swim beach. You can also still find a pretty decent catfish bite near Channel Point. Fishing has been very good at Davis, especially for trout up to around 20 inches. Trollers that are working along the top six or so feet of water through the afternoon are catching dozens of them, here. Anglers from the shore are using power bait and night crawlers and seem to be doing well. Fly fishing has been fair this week. The best fishing may be to use nymphs floated around 3 feet below an indicator.
At Del Valle, fishing has been good for trout as well as catfish and stripers. Many of the bass here are falling into the 8 lb and 12 lb class. The Marina and the Narrows are both good spots if you are looking for bass. You can also find Trout in the narrows this week. At Lafayette, the trout fishing is still slow but the first plant for the season is going in this upcoming week. The cat fishing is best near the back of the lake where the water clarity has improved.
At Los Vaqueros, the striped bass became active last week because of recent trout plants, and one angler managed to catch both an 18 lb and a 22 lb fish two days in a row. The trout fishing has been fair, especially along the shoreline. Some people are also beginning to catch some large holdover trout. At New Melones, the trout fishing has been good along the arms of the creek. Trolling has been relatively fair from around 20 feet down on the main part of the lake.
Pardee is about to close, so give it one last go if you can before the weekend is up. Trolling has been best around the barrel line, especially around 30 feet below the surface. At the San Pablo Reservoir, the trout bite has been best around the Pines and Scow Canyon. Bait fishing seems to be the best way to go right now, but only until the lake closes, which is on Halloween. Finally, Quarry Lakes is experiencing plants for a new rainbow trout strain, Sierra Bows. They are more colorful with nice pink flesh. Anglers have also reported experiencing better fights here.
River Fishing -
At Klamath, the best fishing has been for steelhead, especially into Happy Camp and around Weitchpec. Along the North Coast Rivers, you will find salmon along Eel River, and the Smith seems to be fishing fairly decently. Most of the salmon are currently appearing in the lower river. Fishing broke loose at Trinity last weekend, but now the river is clearing and the prospects seem more difficult. The bite may be tougher, but both steelhead and salmon are moving.
Delta Fishing -
At Frank's Tract, striped bass are coming up from 7lbs to 20lbs with top water lures. The fishing for black bass has been slow, but some of them are coming out with worms. At Rio Vista, the stripers seem to be keen on taking mud suckers and shad, especially between the Rio Vista Bridge, Sherman Island, Decker Island and the Powerlines. There seems to be a lot of moss out there right now, making trolling somewhat difficult. Many of the bass coming out are around 10lbs or less, but there have also been the occasional 30lb bass as well. If you're looking for sturgeon, try Collinsville as well as Pittsburg.
At Tracy, the fishing for striped bass appears to continue being very good. The top catch for this week was a striped bass at 33lbs. Boaters that are cruising along the Grant Line Canal seem to be having good luck either trolling with rebels, or simply casting swim baits.
Saltwater Fishing -
In Berkeley and Emeryville, the island trips are bringing out cod limits and the occasional ling cod and halibut. In Pillar Point, boats have been bringing back cod limits. Crab season is also about to open on the 7th of November. In the San Francisco Bay, the halibut bite is slowing down in the main bay, and the South Bay isn't doing too well either.
In the San Pablo Bay, the lower bay has been excellent when it comes to striped bass fishing. Many are falling in the 5lb to 8lb class, though there are also 16lb fish coming out. Finally, striped bass fishing has been good in the Suisun Bay, especially at the Ozol, Martinez Pier and the Buoy 2. The ticket for success here seems to be live bullhead. You may also find sturgeon here, especially near the Glomar.
