Fishing Report: September 11, 2009

fishingsanfranHere is a look at what’s happening in terms of fishing for the week.

Local Ocean Fishing –

There was a decent calm on the water over the span of the weekend, enough it seems to have attracted skiffs out of the harbor and into the sea. Miles offshore, they were able to find albacore. Some skiffs went down south as well as west as they were looking for Pioneer Canyon and Gumdrop. Others went toward the north, passing Cordell Bank. None of the scores here were particularly fantastic, but ten fish between the two or three different anglers seemed to be well worth the ride in terms of keeping and it made the boat trip well worthwhile in the end.

About 31 miles to the west of Bodega Harbor, the six-pack charter known as Right Hook managed to net a dozen long fins. On Wednesday, the wind was pretty decent, but this upcoming weekend may present a little window worth of calm with a few less knots forecasted for the wind. New Salmon Queen, a big boat that runs out of Emeryville is planning a trip for Monday to find albacore. The boat originally had a trip scheduled for sooner but there wasn’t enough interest there to make it happen.

The C Gull II out of Emeryville went out to the Farallones last week and managed to put in 15 limits worth of rockfish and five to eight lingcod as well. The Queen of Hearts from Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay managed to go out on a windy morning, fishing some out in Pescadero until the wind became too much, but the anglers that were still standing when it was all over apparently managed to get in their limits of rockfish any. So it has been a bit of a rough week for the boats, but they are still pulling up enough fish that it seems to make most of the trips out well worthwhile.

Bay Fishing –

Interest definitely seems to have fallen in the direction of pursuing halibut right now. The fish are definitely still there, but the spring and summer anglers seem to have gone away. Perhaps they are going back to school or work, but who really knows? The big boat skips are definitely skill out there scraping. Last week, New Huck Finn took out 15 halibut for eight different customers. The Happy Hooker as well as the Cal Dawn both lost their skippers for some time, but they will be drumming up some business for upcoming bait trips throughout this upcoming weekend it seems. Fishing is definitely not bad in the bays right now, especially if you are willing to go after the halibut. Now that the bays are clearing up and many people are going home, there is definitely an opportunity for open space and plenty of fishing.

Delta Fishing –

Bobby Barrack did a tournament over this past weekend and then did some guiding on Wednesday. He and a client went down to Collinsville, and they threw out top water lures including Lunker Punkers and Zara Spooks, both in pearl white – And they managed some success, landing stripers up to 17 lbs in weight. After that, they went and caught line sides using pearl colored swim baits that were thrown literally right up to the bank. They would get themselves into a little group of fish, then they would land a couple of the fish, then they would catch nothing for a little while, and then they would find another little group of fish and the whole process would be repeated again and again.

They ended up lipping and releasing at least 15 different fish in that way, with the bass climbing to at least 8 lbs or so. And so Bobby Barrack ended up fishing a tournament this week, and it took him only 5 fish with a total 27 lb combined weight in order for him to win. It was tough fishing for him too, at least according to him, but he landed almost his entire catch using plastic, weed less frogs in the color of cicadas. If you’re looking for some numbers, most of the pros are recommending fishing with the use of watermelon-red colored senkos, weightless and on 15 lb test mono line. You should pitch next to the bordering tules and let them sink down. Work for about 2 feet to 3 feet, and if you do not get a bite, just reel up and throw out again. The best places to make this happen, the places where the fish are really biting are Mildred Island through to Victoria Slough. Keep in mind that you should get in on the water really early or you’ll be bogged down by jet skiers.

Local Lake Fishing –

Catfish plants still appear to be coming regularly, but most of the lake water is poaching trout. The first of the rainbow trout injections has just begun to arrive this past week. The Horseshoe Lake in the Quarry Lakes Regional Park, which is located near Fremont, is going to get a plant of 750 lbs worth of trout very soon. On the same exact day, a matching plant of trout is going to go into the Lake Del Valle in Livermore. Otherwise, the lake fishing right now is all about the cat fishing. Some of the plants for the year so far have gone into Oakland’s Lake Temescal, Castro Valley’s Lake Chabot and Pleasanton’s Shadow Cliffs. If you’re looking for cat fish, rest assured that there are plenty to be had this week. If you are looking for rainbow trout, there is a fair bite to behold. If you are looking for anything else this week, you might have some tough luck, depending on the day.
