Let's see where the fishing action is at this week.
Bay Fishing
Where are plenty of White Sea bass to be had in the bay this week, which is representing somewhat of an oddity. They seem to show up just outside of the Gate every year, but it is not often that they actually wander into the bay. When they do actually wander into the bay, it is never in the type of numbers that are being seen right now and over the past couple of weeks.
The water off of the Alameda Rockwall is seeming to hold the most fish during the past week, and quite a large number of fish were caught. Someone even managed to take out one heck of a bass that weighed about 45 lbs. On Saturday, the six-pack charter with Don Franklin, the Sole-Man, managed to take a group of two out fishing, and they went to the by off of Mission Rock in the South Bay, just about half a mile out and in 55 feet or so of water, and they all lowered live sardines. They hooked five White Sea bass and landed two estimating at about 25 to 35 lbs. For almost an entire hour the fishing seemed to be wide open. They also managed to hook seven different leopard sharks, keeping a male that was 56 inches in length. After that, they took to the Alameda side and landed two soup fins, one of which was a total of 70 lbs.
Franklin was quoted as saying that this was the best half day of fishing that he has ever experienced. Ever since that weekend, the White Sea bass are showing up a lot around Treasure Island as well as along Berkeley flats and even into the South Bay. There is no word as to whether or not the fish are close enough to be hooked from shore.
The big boat, the New Huck Finn went fishing on Wednesday around the Treasure Island area and by 4:30 in the evening they had a score of 27 halibut up to 15 lbs for a total of 15 anglers. There were no White Sea Bass caught here. There was another party boat out there, the Flying A, which managed to take four men out in the North Bay and just beyond toward Martinez and the Mare Island, and they tried with bullheads and ended up with a few bass. Then they ended up switching over to live sardines and they had limits of bass up to 12 lbs for the customers and the crew.
Ocean Fishing
There was a pounding groundswell this past week as well as into the weekend, and this had an impact on the rock fishing, especially along the Marin coast. A lot of the big boats, such as the Cal Dawn for example have been sticking to the inside of the bay. Offshore you will still find fine catching along the Farallones, where easy limits can be caught once you get started. Offshore from that area the boats are mainly going after Albacore. The Emeryville party boat known as the New Salmon Queen had an early score on Wednesday, where five anglers took away 25 longfins.
