Here is a look at what is happening this week in Bay Area fishing.
Freshwater Lake Fishing -
The boat traffic has been light in Berryessa, but for those who are getting out there, there is a decent bass catch in the shallows during the morning hours. Catfish have been plentiful in Camanche, especially around the rocky structure and approximately 25 feet underneath the surface. You will also find Trout deep down as well. You should be trolling down 25 feet or 30 feet deep and you should try using Needlefish for good results. The bass have been active too, but mainly only at first light.
The trout plants have recently begun at Chabot, but here you are still going to find the catfish to be the best bet. The catfish are especially present near the sticks as well as along the eastern shore trail. People are landing cats here as large as 8 lbs. The bass bite at Clear lake has slowed down some, likely because of heavy fishing pressure from the tournaments. You should keep moving in order to find fish, and continue moving once you find them because they really are not concentrated this week. The best stretch seems to be from the middle of the lake toward the south.
There is an early morning bite at Channel Point in Contra Loma for catfish, as well as near the swimming area, but the early morning bite shuts down by the time midmorning comes. The trout plants have begun, with the second in the span of two weeks going in this past Tuesday. At Del Valle, trout as well as striped bass are continuing to come out from the waters near the dam. There are catfish scattered about with a decent concentration, especially along the east shore.
At Lafayette, the catfish bite has been fair, and you may also find panfish to be relatively catchable. The trout plants are not in the plans until later on in October. At Los Vaqueros, most of the stringers are made up of catfish here. You can find cats along the South Cover as well as Cowboy Cove. There are a few stripers and a few largemouth bass that are being caught. Last week someone sunk a Yozuri minnow and caught a 14 lb striper.
In the San Pablo Reservoir, things have been a bit on the slow side. The most recent catfish plant occurred at the beginning of the month, and the upcoming trout plant is not scheduled until the first week in the upcoming month. At Quarry Lakes, fishing also continues to remain slow. The top catch of this week was only a 6 lb catfish, and there was not much else to speak of.
River Fishing -
At Klamath, fishing has been slowing down. We really need to see a cool rain to cut down on the moss, attracting more salmon. Here's hoping. In the lower Sacramento, the trout fishing has been fair, but it is definitely going to improve markedly as the weather starts to cool down in the upcoming weeks. Trinity has been slow as well, primarily because the salmon have not yet managed to arrive here just yet.
Delta Fishing -
At Frank's Tract, the striped bass fishing has been decent for anyone that throws rat-l-traps or small swim baits. Most of what you will find here is bass in around the 2 lb class. Larger fish as high as 8 lbs in weight are being caught during the evening hours. In Rio Vista, the water has been relatively warm at 71 degrees, and this has slowed down the striper bite a bit. A few stripers were caught much earlier in the week around the Rio Vista bridge. Around Broad Slough, some sturgeon were also caught as well.
In Tracy, the striped bass are mostly being taken up and down along Grant Line Canal as well as into Old River. The size of these striped bass is ranging between 5 lbs and 12 lbs. The catfish are also active, and some are climbing to as high as 8 lbs as well.
Saltwater Fishing -
At Berkeley and Emeryville, many island trips are returning with limits worth of cod and the occasional handful of lings as well. The live bait potluck boats are bringing back between one and two halibut for each rod, and the occasional White Sea bass and striped bass also manages its way into the mix as well. There was an Albacore trip on Tuesday that returned with 85 halibut climbing as high as 25 lbs each for only nine anglers. The boat went out 93 miles toward the southwest area from Seal Rocks. There are also Albacore trips that are scheduled for this weekend as well as for this next Tuesday.
At Pillar Point, there are local rock cod trips that are bringing back limits at least most of the time after going out to Martin's Beach and San Gregorio. In the San Francisco Bay, fishing has been relatively slow but some boats are still going out. The Halibut are the most common catch in Berkeley Flats. You may also find a few stripers near the pier, as anglers in the South Bay have been somewhat successful this week.
In San Pablo Bay, the ticket for catching striped bass has been live bullhead. Top spots for you to consider visiting include the Marin shoreline, Hamilton Field and the Pumphouse. The Predator managed to take 8 anglers out to Buoy 4, and they had limits of bass while they were drifting with bullhead and shiners. Halibut fishing has been relatively so-so. In the Suisun Bay, sturgeon as well as striped bass has been coming in from around the third row of ships, Garnet Point, the ship, Cape Fear and the Glomar. Striped bass numbers seem to be improving with each week during the season as the numbers continue to improve on a consistent basis.
