Lake History:

Florence Lake is privately operated, and it's tucked away in the John Muir Wilderness. In fact, it can be a bit hard to find, so we've included some directions that the lake management prepared to assist visitors. It's well worth the trip as there are few lakes out there that are this clear, or this fun to fish. Camping is a rare treat here and this is definitely a lake that we will return to in the future.

Is boating allowed?

Yes, boating is definitely allowed on this lake. It's one of the best places to go boating in the area and the marina is incredibly well stocked and the staff are very helpful. If you prefer not to bring your own boat, you can rent one on site.

The current rates are around $70 per day for an aluminum fishing boat, but they do offer discounts. This isn't the place to get a fancy rig, but you will get a serviceable boat that has been well maintained and that will get the job done well.

Is there a boat launch? Yes, the marina does offer a boat launch, but there may be a small fee for use.

Is camping allowed? Yes, the main campground is called Jackass Meadows Campground. There are 48 sites, and we found them to be very well maintained. You will need to make a reservation but the fees are very low. Up to six people can stay for a day for around $17, and extended stays offer reduced fees as well.

The most interesting thing about the campsites has to be the fresh water that is powered by a solar pump. It really is some of the best tasting water we've ever had, just like the lake management promised. We highly recommend camping here for a weekend, or even a week - it's really that nice.

Is fishing allowed? Absolutely. This is a terrific place to catch fish and you'll be surprised at how well you can do.

What kind of fish are in the lake? There is a great smattering of trout, bass, crappie and bluegill.

Are there any regulations I need to know about? Yes, the usual daily take limits apply and you will need to have your California fishing license on hand. If you'll be boating, you'll also need to bring the proper licensing.

How to Get There:

From San Francisco, Sacramento: Take State Route (SR) 99 south to Madera. At Cleveland Ave exit, turn left onto Cleveland and immediately get in the right-hand lane so you can turn right on Gateway. Go south on Gateway to Yosemite Ave, SR 145. (We checked out this route on April 30, 1999, and could not find a sign on Gateway that indicated Yosemite Ave was State Route 145. Someone probably stole it and it's hanging on the wall in his den next to the Bud Light sign he stole from a bar.) Turn left (east) on SR 145 about 15 miles, cross SR 41 at signal. You're now on Road 145; continue 3 miles to Road 206. Turn right and continue to Friant. At stop sign, turn left, go past Millerton Lake to stop sign at Auberry Rd. Turn left to town of Prather. At stop sign, turn left onto SR 168. Follow signs to Huntington Lake.
