Florence Lake
Florence Lake is located near: Clovis, CA
Phone: 1-877-444-6777
About the Lake:
Florence Lake was built in the early 1900's as part of a hydroelectric project. Nearby Huntington Lake was also constructed for this purpose. Today, both lakes are popular destinations for boaters that are looking to experience some tranquility and the beauty of mother nature. The clear waters are a treat and make fishing even easier.
The lake was named for Florence Starr, the sister of the famous mountain climber Walter Starr. The project that was originally envisioned in 1886 is still being carried out today as Florence Lake is an integral part of the local hydroelectric plant.
There is ferry service across the lake, which is very popular with hikers and sightseers. There is also a store at the lake that is completely stocked and makes it easy to get by for a couple of days if you plan to camp nearby. Day use is the most common method however, and the whole family can easily find something to do while you're here. Please keep in mind that if you do plan to drink the water here it must be purified.
Boat Launches:
There are free launch facilities at the lake. Please call ahead for more information.
What You Need to Know:
The fishing here is quite good, but you will need to follow the state guidelines. This means having a permit to fish and observing the limits that the lake posts for each type of fish. Although this is a great boating lake, it is not recommended for sailboats simply because the wind tends to be very inconsistent. Please be advised that the lake does have a 15mph speed limit for all boats.Â
Numerous trout can be found in the lake and the exceptionally clear waters make it very easy to spot your fish. It doesn't take long at all to reach your limit simple because the fishing is so good here.
The lake has a special warning for campers:
"Camping is available at Jackass Meadow just below Florence Lake on the South Fork of the San Joaquin River. Reservations must be made at least three days in advance of arrival by contacting www.recreation.gov or at 1-877-444-6777. There are active bears in the area so please use the food storage boxes provided in the campgrounds."
Picnicking is very popular here and there are loads of opportunities for hiking as well as horseback riding. While you can't camp exactly at the lake, the nearby camping sites mentioned above are well maintained and suitable for families.
How to Get There:
Take Hwy 168 east from Clovis to Huntington Lake. At Huntington Lake turn right on the Kaiser Pass Road (not recommended for large RV's or trailers) and travel to the intersection of the Florence and Edison Lake Roads. Continue straight for 7 miles to the lake. Travel time from Clovis is 2 ½ hours. The Kaiser Pass Road is open for vehicular traffic late May through November.
