Good Bottom Fishing is Still Available

Some bottom-feeding fish fishermen were afraid that until the liberal blackfish season opened, there will be little to fish for, but this fear has been proven to be without grounds, as after an excellent weekend of fishing it has become clear that good fishing for sea bass, porgies and ling will extend at least until the middle of November if not longer. The liberal blackfish season is likely only going to be a shadow of what it used to be, when the actual officially kicks off in about 13 days. Still, the possession limit of six fish is going to be a nice change, as anglers have recently been limited to just once since the middle of July. Before mid July, and as early as May 1, anglers could not possess any fish, so this is a nice change.

According to Scott Hilliard, the skipper of a Prowler V out of Atlantic Highlands, many pool winners have been blackfish as of late. With fishing in the Scotland Grounds and the mud Buoy, there has been especially good fishing with porgies and big ling, some nice blackfish and sea bass. Customers are certainly beginning to look forward to keeping more of the blackfish that they catch. The biggest blackfish caught so far this year was a beautiful 8 ½ pounder. This fish was caught by Luther Gaddy from Easton, PA. Jerry Wangellien in Washington also won a pool offering a nice blackfish.

Stripers have been especially common between 4:30 and 10 o'clock pm. According to Hilliard, they've been caught early on clams and then they've switched to eels later on. Fishermen have been looking forward to the blackfish limit becoming more liberal in future weeks, especially since they have been doing well with porgies and blackfish, especially at the Mud Buoy. This has also been a good place to find sea bass. According to Captain Tom Buban from the Atlantic Highlands, the Mud Buoy grounds have allowed people to bring fish home from dinner every day, meaning things are going good and there is still plenty of fishing to be had.

Along the beaches, fishermen have been able to find a nice mix of bluefish and striped bass which has provided plenty of action over the weekend for party boats and private books according to the staff at Hoffman's Marina in Brielle. Fishing was especially fair over the past weekend, with fishermen trolling for stripers over Friday and Saturday, which was also the most ideal time to fish for bluefish as well.

Most anglers are reporting lots of bass ranging from 24 inches to 28 inches, but legal fish also turned up here and there as well. Following the weather and the birds, fishermen were able to see decent hauls over the weekend, even in shallower waters and deeper waters alike. Clearly there is still plenty of bottom fishing to be had, and the more liberal fishing limits are coming just in time.
