Grouse Lake is located near Pollack Pines, CA
Phone: (530) 647-5415
Is boating allowed?
No, this is a desolation wilderness.
Is camping allowed?
Yes, there are numerous campsites located around the lake. However, they are all only accessible by hiking in during the summer months or skiing in during the winter months. No motorized vehicles are allowed anywhere near the wilderness area.
Please note that all campsites are operated under a "first come, first served" basis and they are limited. The lake management asks that all campers follow the leave no trace policy during their stay here. The maximum group size is limited to 12 in order to preserve the area.
In addition, you will need a day use permit if you plan to stay longer than a few hours. These permits can be purchased from the Ranger District - reachable at the number listed above. They do have a few rules for campers:
"Please do not leave fish entrails in the water or bury them, as they do not decompose in high elevations. It is preferable to pack them out or scatter them in a discrete location where animals can consume them. Please bury human and dog waste and toilet paper 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from lakes and streams."
What you need to know:
This is an incredible lake and although it may not be easy to access, and there are quite a few rules in place to protect it, there are few bodies of water in this area that are this good. If you have never visited a desolation wilderness area before, we highly recommend it, but please do follow the rules to ensure that everyone can enjoy it. As the Desolation Wilderness Act of 1964 stated, we need to "ensure an enduring resource of Wilderness for present and future generations."

Is fishing allowed?
Absolutely. Even though the lake is no longer stocked, there are still plenty of fish here to go around. Please see the above note about disposing of fish remains.
What kind of fish can be caught here?
Rainbow trout and brook trout are plentiful in the lake.
What kind of regulations do I need to know about?
In addition to the regulations listed above, the lake management also reminds hikers and fishermen that although the lake is open all year round for fishing, getting there may be a problem, especially if there is a lot of snow.
Remember, in a desolation wilderness area, you are on your own. We highly recommend taking a GPS system with you if you will be camping in this area. It is also a good idea to have at least one member of your group be experienced in hiking and camping as well as what you need to know about desolation wilderness areas.
These are exciting places to visit, but they are not without danger or rules. However, by following these rules you can ensure your safety and still have a great time.
