How to Catch a Largemouth Bass

Large Mouth BassOut of any fish you could ever come across, the largemouth bass will take a good deal of skill and strength to land. This is fun fishing, especially if you are looking for a great competition. If you’re looking for some great tips on how to increase your chances for successfully catching a largemouth bass, you’ve come to the right place. Here are just a few tips to get you started.

1. Find the right water.

Largemouth bass are usually found in standing waters. They do not like dealing with strong currents, so you will have your best luck on a calm lake or in a very quiet creek or river. Reservoirs are also a great place to find largemouth bass. If you’re dealing with a manmade or managed lake, it is always a good idea to find out when it was last stocked and how the management handles the largemouth bass population.

2. Look for vegetation.

Bass like to hang around areas where they will feel safe and protected. Lily pads, areas of standing reeds and other clumps of vegetation will usually be the best places to find a largemouth bass. You can also look for bass around manmade structures, since they fulfill the same purpose to a bass as a natural clump of vegetation. Piers and docks are usually the best place to find a bass, especially on a quiet lake.

3. Pick the right season.

The best way to ensure a successful catch is to know when to try. The best season by far for largemouth bass fishing is spring. This can make a huge difference in the amount of bass you are able to catch. Bass prefer water that is around 55 degrees, so you may want to bring a thermometer with you. During the cooler months, they go deep into the water and they are much harder to find. The best possible time to catch them is May, but this can vary from year to year, based on the temperature of the water.

On the flipside, they don’t like water that is too hot either. It is nearly impossible to have a lot of luck fishing for largemouth bass during the summer months. They typically spawn when the water temperature ranges from 55 to 62 degrees, and after that point, you will have greater difficulty finding any.

4. Use the right bait and lures.

Bass prefer nightcrawlers, but you can have success with various different types of baits. Live minnows can be used, but will bring the best success when you weight them so that they hit the bottom of the lake. Bass prefer to scavenge along the bottom of the lake for their food, regardless of where they are located in the water. With that in mind, your lures should be heavy and red in color. This is the color that bass will most frequently go for. In dark water however, you will be best served with a bright colored lure that has a busy pattern so that the fish can easily spot it.
